The Bamboo GP3 team is celebrating after Melville McKee piloted the Bamboo GP3 car to victory in the second race of the GP3 Series meeting at the Nurburgring in Germany. Only 8 races into the series and Bamboo have claimed their maiden victory on the back of what was a strong weekend for the Silverstone based team. Bamboo certainly seem to have found their groove with McKee delivering 2 strong results, 7th in race 1 and 1st in Race 2 and Lewis Williamson showing a very strong 4th in both races, Carmen Jorda however was unlucky to be involved in an incident and unfortunately recording a DNF in race 1 and a 24th in race 2.

The Bamboo GP3 cars looked strong all weekend with Williamson 5th in Practice 1 and also qualifying 5th, McKee qualified in 13th and Jorda 27th. Race 1 started with all the usual drama and after a number of incidents Williamson found his way to 4th, where he kept his head down, stayed out of trouble and bagged the points, just missing out on the podium. McKee had a strong drive from his mid-field qualifying position and, after a number of skirmishes, made his way to 7th, recording his best result so far and taking his first points of the season.

It was Race 2 where McKee claimed victory, starting second on the grid and launching himself into the lead by the first corner, then pulling out a 1 second gap, he managed to withstand the intense pressure applied by Sims in the latter stages of the race and kept the crowds on the edge of their seat until the final lap where he crossed the finish line in P1 to claim victory. Williamson also had a strong race, again keeping his head down, keeping it clean and passing Carlos Sainz Jr to take 4th, to take another good haul of points.

Melville McKee: “Winning is a really special feeling, we’ve had good pace all year but nothing shows that more than a race win. I was aware that I had to manage my tyres, especially towards the end of the race with Simms gaining, but a close finish just makes things all the more exciting. It’s great to give the team what they deserve after all the hard work they have put in.

Richard Coleman - Chief Executive – Bamboo: “Melville drove a very mature race and kept his head under pressure and I’m delighted that he has recorded Bamboo’s first win. I am proud of the team that after only 8 races in a new series we already have race-winning pace. This will give the whole team a well deserved lift and we’re looking forward to the rest of the season.”
