Double Podium for Team West-Tec F3 at Barcelona
Old 4 Nov 2014 09:49

A double podium was a satisfying result for Team West-Tec F3 as the 2014 EuroFormula Open and Spanish F3 Championships completed the season at the home of the Spanish Grand Prix.

Yarin Stern led the way with a very determined performance which saw him at the top of the timesheets in free practice and qualifying a highly competitive third for both races. This was a slight problem as, in both races, and through no fault of his own, he found himself on the outside at turn one and losing places as a result. However, in both races he showed tremendous pace and executed really exciting overtakes to take his place on the podium and finish fourth in the Spanish F3 Championship as a consequence.

Tanart Sathienthirakul was another driver to show well in free practice though a disappointing qualifying in race one left him with work to do, though he was able to recover very well to finish eighth in that race. A much better qualifying on Sunday was undone when he was hit by a rival at the start although he again tigered his way through to ninth despite obvious damage to the car.

Shaun Thong is a driver who has been in the wars lately but he had a much more consistent weekend and was only denied a likely points scoring end to the year due to a grid penalty which hung over from the previous meeting in Monza, as he secured two solid race finishes.

Igor Walilko was a new driver to the series, debuting with the British team after a competitive year in the Formula ADAC Masters in Germany. He did a really good job to get well stuck in with the experienced drivers in midfield and will surely be a front-runner if he returns next year.

Finally, Nici Pohler was really unfortunate to be struck down by flu and unable to fly at the last minute on doctors orders, so Fabian Schiller flew in. Another graduate of the Formula ADAC Masters, Fabi missed most of the free practice and therefore did extremely well to qualify 11th and 15th, and can be proud of his top ten finish in his debut at this level.

John Miller, Team West-Tec F3: Barcelona is always a very hard-fought weekend and it was pleasing to see all of our drivers at the front during the course of the weekend. Yarin had the best of it and could easily have taken his first win if the cards had fallen a little differently at each race start.

The series is very competitive and we were pleased to clinch third in the Championship. Although, as team, we undoubtedly did not have as good a year as in 2013, when we dominated, all of our drivers can be proud of their endeavours and I look forward to seeing them develop their careers in the future.

We have already started testing ahead of 2015, when the series will adopt the paddle-shift gears, much as we as a team already use in the FIA Formula 3 Championship, and we are looking forward to next season already!

The most successful team in the history of the EuroFormula "F3" Open, Team West-Tec F3 enjoys team support from Motul, Nielsen Chemicals, Eibach, Autosport, Sunwise, P&O Ferries, Brittany Ferries, Mechanix, B-G Racing and Galuppo.
