Burton takes a double Martini at Brands Hatch

John Burton was the toast of the Martini Trophy at Brands Hatch (2/3 July) when he scored a superb double victory on the fabulous Grand Prix circuit during the HSCC Historic Superprix.

Created by the Historic Sports Car Club, the Martini Trophy is for the 2-litre sports-racing cars of the 1970s and has a four-event schedule in 2011. The Brands Hatch races marked the second weekend of the schedule and the cars made a great sight as they raced at Brands for the first time since the mid-1970s.

Burton was the class of the opening race as he rocketed into a commanding lead on the opening lap. As the 2-litre veteran built his lead lap by lap, there was a wonderful battle for second place over the first half of the race. Charlie Kemp (Lola T210), Doug Hart (March 75S), Richard Evans (Osella Abarth PA1) and Steve Hodges (Chevron B31) ran in close formation until a broken throttle cable sidelined Hart after five laps.

“I love Brands Hatch GP circuit; it is one of my favourite tracks,” said Burton after his first Martini victory. “We had the engine going a lot better than at Silverstone.”

As Evans worked clear in second, Kemp fended off the determined Hodges for many laps until Hodges dived ahead to take third overall. Kemp’s reward for a gritty drive was fourth and victory in the class for non-wing cars.

“It was an exciting race at the start,” said Evans. “It was a shame that Doug Hart dropped out.” Hodges, meanwhile, was pleased to finally work ahead of Kemp. “He just needs a wing and then he’d be unbeatable,” said Hodges of his rival. Hugh Price (Chevron B21), Sandy Watson (Chevron B19) and John Sheldon (Chevron B19) were next in class B after some close dicing.

Burton was a runaway winner of race two on Sunday although the star of the race was Martin O’Connell who took over Watson’s Chevron B19 and rocketed up from the back of the grid. Fourth by the start of lap two, Martin charged after Kemp for third and the lead of the wingless class and he moved ahead on lap four.

O’Connell then hunted down Evans for second overall as well as the class win, but Evans fought back and crossed the line on the tail of O’Connell. Kemp finished fifth behind Hart’s March 75S which worked its way up from the back row of the grid after retiring in race one. Sheldon took third in class B from Jonathan Loader (Chevron B19) and Neil Primrose (Lola T212).

The next date for the Martini Trophy is at the Oulton Park Gold Cup (28/29 August).
