750MC launch Historic Birkett

The 750 Motor Club has launched a new relay event targeted specifically at historic and vintage cars, to run later in 2013. Following the tremendous success of the Birkett Relay Race in 2012, which saw 67 teams participating in the 62nd annual running of the 750 Motor Club’s classic end of season event, Competitions Manager Giles Groombridge decided that the time was right to create a complimentary race for older vehicles.

The ‘Historic Birkett’, as it has been tagged, will be run on the challenging Snetterton 300 circuit on Saturday 2 November.

“When marketing the 2012 event to potential competitors, the feedback I got from drivers with classic machinery such as MGBs, Austin Healeys and TRs was that they were no longer comfortable competing in the Birkett,” explained Groombridge. “This is mainly due to the speed differentials between their machines and the very rapid new generation of sports racing cars such as those seen in our Bikesports and RGB Championships.”

“With our Clerks also forbidding any entries from pre-war machinery on similar grounds, I thought it was time we tried to create a fun end of season event to specifically cater for these cars and drivers that have contributed so much to the Birkett story over the years,” he added.

The race will be run over four hours and teams of two to six cars will be welcome, with 1974 being set as the cut-off date for entries. Classes will set by engine capacity with a standalone category for pre-war machinery.

The event will run on similar lines to the regular Birkett Relay race, which will again run on the Silverstone Grand Prix circuit this year on 26 October.

Further information on either event is available by calling Giles Groombridge on 01332 814548 or by email on giles@750mc.co.uk. Details will be added to the relaunched club website – 750mc.co.uk – shortly.
