SC Corinthians on top after opening weather-affected Donington Practice
Old 1 Aug 2009 11:52
SC Corinthians set the early pace in today’s practice for the latest rounds of the Superleague Formula by Sonangol race at Donington Park.

The Brazilian club’s Antônio Pizzonia (BRA) headed the timesheets on aggregate after three, 30-minute sessions around the 2.5 miles (4.02 km) British parkland track staged in ever-changing track and weather conditions.

Damp and drizzly conditions greeted competitors for the opening practice shortly after 10am (CET), a session which saw Pizzonia fastest (1:27.268) – his best result to date being a third place in the “Super Final” at Magny Cours. Tottenham Hotspur’s Craig Dolby (GB) and Olympiacos’ Davide Rigon (IT) were sidelined early on with engine and gearbox gremlins respectively.

Session two saw Sevilla FC’s Esteban Guerrieri (ARG) top the times (1:33.569) in constant rain. The Spanish club replaces the Al Ain entry with Zolder second race winner Guerrieri at the helm. The Sporting Clube de Portugal (Pedro Petiz) and Olympique Lyonnais (Nelson Panciatici) cars incurred damage in separate incidents while PSV Eindhoven’s Dominick Muermans (NED) caused a brief red flag early on when he spun and stalled in a dangerous position.

Sevilla (1:29.326) were quickest in the third session staged on a drying track courtesy of a cool, strong wind but with all cars still using full treaded “wet” tyres. Galatasaray’s Scott Mansell (GB), replacing the previous incumbent of the Turkish club’s car, Duncan Tappy, caused the session to be red flagged with seven minutes to run when he spun off at Redgate Corner which allowed Guerrieri better his time in the closing moments.

Meanwhile Liverpool FC’s Adrián Vallés (SP), who has taken overall “weekend winner” honours at both Magny Cours and Zolder and leads the six venue SLF series by 24-points, set the seventh fastest time (1:31.762).

Qualifying for places on the opening race 18-car grid is staged from 15:50 (CET) concluding with the two-car pole-position “shoot out” at 17:05 (CET).
