Sussex based Teamport Titans claimed the overall and endurance team awards and the cash prize Race of Champions at Ellough Park this weekend. The Titans didn’t have it all their way with Birmingham Wheels Bullets’ Ryan Lindsay taking the driver of the day title after winning two of his sprint races and finishing his other sprint in third.

22 teams competed in identical karts with Biz Kart Evo chassis and twin GX160 Honda engines with drivers weight equalised to 85kg. Following a one hour practice session, drivers competed in a packed schedule of 12 ten lap races, a Race of Champions qualifying and a 15 lap race for a £550 cash prize before qualifying and two one-hour 20 minute endurance races.

In the morning sprint races, seven different teams won the twelve races, with Birmingham Wheels Bullets having the most wins with four. Teamsport Titans and Hereford Heroes claimed two wins apiece while the other four were won by Northampton Knights, Birmingham Wheels Bruisers, Birmingham Wheels Bulldozers and Cambridge Cobras. Teamsport Titans driver Owen Jenman claimed pole position in qualifying for the Race of Champions ‘dash for cash’, and led the race from the start, driving away to finish with an impressive 7.5 second lead at the flag after 15 laps.

In the afternoon endurance races, Teamsport Titans again qualified on pole and led to the flag while the Cambridge Cobras and Cambridge King Cobras claimed the remaining podium slots having started eighth and sixth respectively. Enduro Two was a complete reverse grid start. Teamsport Titans took another win despite starting 22nd. Cambridge Cobras finished second with Worcester Raptors just under two-tenths of a second behind after the eighty minute race.

Owen Jenman, Teamsport Titans: “ The Race of Champions was really awesome! I made a good start and made a break straight away and got into a good rhythm. About halfway through I and saw I had an advantage and settled down. My team-mate [Damian Hickman] spoilt the endurance for me. Having started last he had already made it to the front by the time I took over so all I had to do was get it to the line. We’re very happy with the results – the team has done well.”

Bob Pope, EKL Director: “Ellough Park was our second EKL event and I think we’ve ironed out a few wrinkles and everyone had a great day of racing. The atmosphere was very good and the driving standards have improved as people now have an idea of what to expect. We’ve seen a big improvement for some of the teams in just one event and it’s really good to see so many happy drivers at the end of the day. EKL’s formula of equalised karts and drivers and value for money is really working.”

The Elite Karting League offers affordable competitive karting. Each event entry costs a driver less than £100 and teams stand to collect prize money of up to £1000 per event. Drivers are weight equalised to 85kg making the racing more competitive. The teams are racing in identical karts with Biz Kart Evo chassis and equalised twin GX160 Honda engines.

The next round of EKL takes place at Clay Pigeon, Dorset on 22nd July.
