AmDTuning.com adds to win tally at Donington

The AmDTuning.com team picked up its second victory of the 2013 season as the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championship headed to Donington Park for the second meeting of the campaign.

The West Thurrock-based team headed to the East Midlands on the back of an impressive start to the year at Brands Hatch last month, where newly-signed driver James Kaye celebrated his return to the series by becoming the first driver to take a victory in the Jack Sears Trophy for drivers using Super 2000-spec machinery.

The Donington Park weekend started well for Isle of Wight-based racer James as he led the way amongst the Jack Sears Trophy runners in both free practice sessions before securing top honours amongst the class in qualifying. A strong lap at the wheel of his turbo-powered Volkswagen Golf was good enough to take 20th on the grid, with James being the only S2000 driver to lap below the 1min 12secs mark.

Having shown the speed in the car throughout Saturday, James and the team went into race day in confident mood, with a strong drive in race one being rewarded with a second Jack Sears Trophy victory of the campaign. Seeing off the challenge of Liam Griffin, James crossed the line in 19th spot overall and looked well set to add to his tally in race two.

Sadly, his second race would be over within seconds of it starting, when he was hit from behind by the Ford of David Nye as the field streamed away from the grid. The contact was enough to turn the Golf into the pitwall, with the resultant damage putting James out of the race on the spot.

Hard work from the AmDTuning.com mechanics meant James was able to take his place on the grid for race three and despite starting from fifth in class, he stormed through into the Jack Sears Trophy lead by lap three. However, despite controlling things from the class lead, James’ race would end in disappointment when an electrical issue forced him to come to a halt on circuit.

Despite a missed opportunity to add to his win tally, James heads away from Donington Park in a share of the Jack Sears Trophy lead with two victories to his name ahead of his ‘home’ race at Thruxton in a fortnight.

“The car was strong all weekend at Donington Park and we really showed our potential throughout Saturday and then in the opening race,” he said. “Race one went well and it was good to earn our place on the podium again and then in race two, there was nothing I could do; I simply got caught up in it all when someone else had an incident.

“The team did a fantastic job to repair the damage there was to the car and it felt strong again in race three, but unfortunately there was an electrical gremlin that put us out which is a real shame as the victory was ours for the taking. While there is some disappointment that we’ve only come away from Donington with a single Jack Sears Trophy win to our name, I think we’ve put in a really good performance and can head to Thruxton in confident mood.”

Team boss Shaun Hollamby agreed that the pace and potential shown by the AmDTuning.com team was again the major positive to take out of the weekend, with the focus now on ensuring that the team makes the most of its speed in the races to come.

“Yet again we’ve shown real promise this weekend and it was great that race day started with another Jack Sears Trophy win – as at Brands Hatch,” he said. “I think it shows how strong the car was that we’re a bit disappointed it was our only win as there was clearly the potential today for James to add to that, but in the second race he was the innocent party and couldn’t have done anything about what happened.

“At the end of last season I was in two minds whether to continue with our BTCC team. However, the strength of the people within our team made me decide to continue, as I felt I would be wasting their potential by not competing. On Sunday, they showed me how lucky I am to be working with such a great team of guys. They did an amazing job to get the car repaired and out on the grid for race three as they basically had to rebuild the front end in a very short space of time. I also want to give thanks to the marshals who helped push our car back to the garage after the accident, which saved us 30 minutes in available repair time. It’s thanks to these volunteers that the British motorsport scene is so vibrant.

“It’s a shame that the electrical problem then forced us out of race three, but we leave Donington in a share of the Jack Sears Trophy lead and need to push on when we get to Thruxton, which is another circuit where the Golf has gone well in the past and where we hope to add to our win tally.”
