Tyre Science

Without wanting to sound like a nerd, does anyone know of any books that delve into tyre science in any great depth. I understand tyres as well as any racing book, but i want to take my knowledge to the next level. And yes i know, i need to get out more.

If you have not already done so take a look at the Bridgestone site there is a lot of techy stuff on there also on the Avon site.

I found this one in the September 2003 issue of RaceCar Engineering.

The Racing & High Performance Tire by Paul Haney. Published by TV motorsports and SAE.

Unfortuantely, outside of working for a tyre company (and even then, only in the right dept.) it is really tough to get any info.

Try asking what they actually put into a tyre compound one day. The silence is deafening.

I have the Paul Haney book. Only a fifth of the way through it but it does have more technical detail relating to tyres than all the other race books I have read so far.

Just a pity that it is a typical American book and is heavily padded out with largely pointless 'interviews' with racing 'celebrities'. I guess this type of stuff is a pre-req of any book in the states and you can easily skip over them.

I now have the book and what a bloody good book it is. It goes in to a lot more detail than racing books. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in tyres. Thanks for the lead,Denis.

Amazon seemed the best place to get it; the price is £46 though. Having said that, if they do not have anymore you can get them from SAE International, at www.ameritech.co.uk/sae
