Who invented the 'chop'?
I'm not sure, but my guess would be Senna and Prost. They chopped each other quite a lot didn't they? e.g. Estoril '88 (Senna), Suzuka '89 (Prost).
And the sad reality is that, ever since then, the chopping of your rival that Senna and Prost did has become a normal part of F1. Damon Hill, Ralf Schumacher, Michael Schumacher, Jacques Villeneuve, Juan Pablo Montoya etc have all used the 'chop'. In fact, I think nearly everyone on the grid changes their line at the start. But Michael Schumacher was NOT the one who invented the 'chop' anyway! |

No, TGF didn't invent the "chop" -- but he is the one whose "chopping" was ruled within the rules -- as long as HE is the one who does it.
Senna and Prost were both running outside the rules when they engaged in this dangerous and illegal maneuver. |

It was Fu Man Chop from Shanghai, who subsequently formed the largest fast food chop chain in China. His favourite was stir fried beefo chop, which required a lot of chopping of Vegies and beef. It has been widely rumoured that the Chinese intend to import Crocodiles to add to the National chop as a delicacy, going for around US$50 per takeway meal.

Of course, many others hopped onto the chop wagon, like Mr Pork, then there was this young kid Judo, and even Colonel Sanders tried it with his Chicken chop. Then there was this chinese guy in a hurry called: "chop chop". Then there was this Japanese fellow who quite successfully ran the Ginza chop, and the french fellow who started the Channel chop. I think history will reveal that there are many chops.

The chop was developed by drivers, who by luck were not born earlier and driving cars that would crush their legs, throw them at high speed into tress or fences, or burn them to a fiery crisp when involved in contact with another car.
This is course not to say that drivers were never ruthless, or even nutters before, but the reality of the cars meant that there was much greater respect amongst everyone for the potential of such things as a chop. |

I totally forgot - CHOPPER REID. I should have remembered because his friend Vincent Pierce was shot down in broad daylight outside the Coles Supermarket in Port Melbourne just one week after I was there.
Then, of course there was the Toe Cutter Gang in Sydney. And we mustn't forget the Kray brothers in the West End , although I can't remember what these two were chopping off  Valve Last edited by Valve Bounce; 26 Jul 2002 at 01:40. |
