Ultimate marshaling challenge?
The annual Donington Park Trucks n Fireworks event is coming up, so I thought I'd ask firstly who, if anyone is planning to be there, and secondly how far up the list of "Ultimate Marshaling Challenges" marshaling for trucks would come? Anyone done it before? How is it different from cars? And if that's not your ultimate challenge, what is?

They are a bit different, because they are just a bit bigger LOL. But you dont usualy stand trackside for them.
Think the karts are worse (no brains) and hurt your ankles when the gits get to close. |

mind out for the old hairpin - a couple of years ago, a truck ended up going through the catch fencing & out the other side.....

The only challenge for incident marshals is to stay awake.
Very few marshals are required, you cannot deal with incidents until the trucks have stopped circulating and you spend most of the day stood down. (Yawn) |

The Ultimate challenge must be to stay awake while Zip formula are on track A certain son-in-law of mine christened them Formula Mogadon.

Ultimate marshalling challenge - probably need to start a poll. Some suggestions:
1) Finding a toilet at the Grand Prix. 2) Getting home from Donington before darkness falls (even in summer). 3) Telling Colin McRae that Nicky Grist has clocked him in early. 4) Meeting the person who'll say "Yes, I'm responsible for the programme. I promise to schedule lunch breaks and sensible finishing times in future." 5)Ringing the MSA and being put through to the person responsible for marshals. Any more? |

You are so cynical Mr Wooley. Hows about instructing everyone at the next meeting at the Walsh to take a full hour lunch...If it happens I may just come along and do a spot on the bank old lad......

2) Possible, assuming you live in Castle Donington 3) Would be more fun to tell Colin that Nicky Grist is co-driving Sebastien Loeb next year..... 4) ...and then finding out he has nothing to do with the programme after all... 5) Impossible. Everyone would say it was someone else. |

You guys just can't resist a chance to whinge, can you? I genuinely wanted to know what it is that you find most challenging when marshalling, not how hard it is to find the loo...

Okay then, Miss Serious
How about trying to remember who has lapped who when blue flagging a 20-odd lap race? |

I seem to remember you were on startline briefly during practise! i.e. running across it at a rapid rate of knots

The best advice I can offer for truck racing is stand back if the buggers even look like their getting out of shape. As for the ultimate marshalling challenge, how about getting out of the Donny car park the same day that the meeting finishes?

The only thing that stops a truck - is another truck! Things like pit walls, armco tyres, just deflect them slightly.
Ultimate challenge? Try flagging at 2 posts at once! I did it on my one & only visit to Mondello. I can't remember the numbers but they are quite close, one going one way, then the other one goes the other way - if you get my drift! |

Did a truck demo at mosport ALMS meeting this August. The Canadian marshals didn't believe me when I said we need to man the post differently! Then they saw for themselves and moved.... very quickly.... back into the spectator area!

Ultimate marshalling challenge that doesn't involve toilets?
Hmmm cleaning up mini oil perhaps....? I think, for me, it has to be blue flagging an endurance race. Nightmare! |
