Another shark fin surfaces...
It's a big name this time too: McLaren. Assuming they consider it race-worthy.

But chop the advertising space in half for the rear wing from the rear camera. I'm suprised the sponsors on the cars already with these shark fins aren't kicking up a stink.

Might get caught for having overlapping bodywork, but it remains to be seen what parts of the body will have the regulations aimed at eliminating winglets, and what parts wont. If the whole of the car couldnt have overlapping bodywork, then the undercut sidepods would also be illegal i suppose. IIRC though, it'll only apply to the upper surfaces of the car which should still allow the undercut sidepods and full length undertray/floor.

Aethestically they look bloody hideous! Aerodynamically they must give quite a performance boost, as they are slowly beginning to appear amongst more and more teams.

I think if Mclaren do go ahead and use them for a race weekend, then most of the field will probably follow suit within a race or two.

But I do hope that this year is the only time we will have to see them.

I recall Mclaren had something similar on their cars back in 1994 or was it 1995? It didn't stay long.

Not necessarily. I think some people forget Williams ran their version for Monaco, but havent used it since. Apparently theyre having some flexibility/rigidity issues.

I'm fairly certian that I saw them using it during free practice at Silverstone. They have not raced it since Monaco though...

I really hope mclaren doesnt use it this year and that next year they ban all these stupid gimmicks - honda bunny ears and the shark fins especially.

I still find it amazing how bothered people get by stuff "looking ugly" on racing cars. Don't get me wrong, I find stuff that looks ugly on cars, but it doesn't fill me with the passion it seems to so many.

Rather than being greatly bothered by the fact it is ugly, my thoughts, and such, are rather more drawn by the function said things provide (and how this function operates, as it were).

Each to their own, though, I guess.
