Marshalling at Goodwood FoS & Revival

Hi,

I am new to marshalling and so I hope you don't mind me asking the question.
I would love to marshal at Goodwood this year and so was wondering if there are special requirements to do so, or if there are restrictions on Trainees helping out?
Is signing up just a case of doing so in the normal way and do you have to, or is it preferable to volunteer for the whole thing?

Sorry if I have asked some stupid questions, but I am sure you can answer them.

Hi Benj,

as I've been told many times the only stupid question is the one you didn't ask!

There is no restriction as such, on trainees although you are selected, ie, not every volunteer is accepted. I was accepted as 'technically' a trainee last year although had attended over thirty meetings by then and was known to BARC (they organise it) by then so that probably helped. I also volunteered for the whole weekend and that does definitely help.
So if you volunteer for all three (or four) days and get the application in soonest though as you have left it a bit late, that will increase your chance of success.
Good luck.

Hiya!
We have volunteered for FoS too, but this will only be our second or third outing by the time it comes around. When, roughly, do you know if you have been accepted?
Thanks!
Steph

No harm in trying to get in this year! Do let them know whether you've been to any training days, including fire practicals, or other high profile events in your career so far - it might just help swing it for you?

If not lucky this year, then bear in mind that other events will probably be short of help and welcome new faces - HSCC @ Brands GP & 750MC @ Donington spring to mind.

Also, trawl back through older threads on here which give good advice about camping / refreshments etc.

Goodwood is a BARC meeting. Go onto their web site
www.barc.net
and look under contact for the marshal secretary (marshals@barc.net). Contact him and ask him if he feels you will have enough experience for the event. If he is unsure I expect he can put you in touch with the chief marshal.

Goodwood usually fills early, so you may be too late for this year anyway.

You might still get in if you apply now - I started my first year of marshalling at the Easter Monday GRRC Sprint at Goodwood, then applied for FoS and Revival straight after that (as trainee with no training days) and got selected for both events!

There are indeed some special requirements for the Goodwood Events. All applicants must be fully equipped with a good sense of fun, and in some cases a well stocked wardrobe of dressing up things. Also, if you can do all 3(4) days it's a bonus.

I'd say go right ahead and apply for it. Trainees do get accepted but you have to be in it to win it so to say!

FOS is not on the The BARC online volunteering form. Does that mean just that it's not on the list, or that I'm not going this year, do you think?

That normally means that the applications are closed due to having too many people. It was on there!

I know it was on there, I ticked the box I believe Thruxton BTCC is still on there, even though that was closed. Well, guess I should find out within a few weeks.

It HAS been closed because the BARC have sufficient marshals.

Just got this off the BARC web site

GOODWOOD SELECTION PROCEDURES - Due to the large amount of volunteers we get for the Goodwood events, it is regretted that a selection process may have to be undertaken. We will be looking for a broad range of duties and experience but as a general rule any Race Assistants under the age of 16, Trainee Marshals or Drivers wishing to gain marshalling signatures will not be accepted.

So no trainees?

I did both as a trainee last year and have heard from many marshals who knew of other trainees that have attended so it's worth asking. As has already been mentioned your experience level may influence the decision to be accepted.
