Possum Bourne Update - Thursday
Subaru Rally Team Australia driver Possum Bourne today remains in a serious but stable condition and in a drug-induced coma in the Intensive Care Unit of Dunedin General Hospital, New Zealand, following a traffic accident last Friday.
His wife, Peggy, and family remain by his bedside. Peggy said: "I am so proud of Possum for putting up this amazing fight in his battle to overcome this tragedy. "The response from the Australian public, Australian rally fans and indeed fans around the world has been amazing and their concerns and care for Possum so clearly expressed through cards, faxes, emails and messages, continue to give us strength. "Everyone knows the incredible passion Possum has for rallying and I know he wishes everybody well at this weekend's Rally of Canberra, particularly his team mates at Subaru. "Just by being there Cody, Greg, Dean and Glenn and the whole team are doing Possum proud." Messages can be left at the website www.possumpwrc.co.nz on the message board, or faxed to New Zealand 09 238 5737. (From Australia: 0011 64 9 238 5737). The accident occurred near Queenstown, on New Zealand's south island. |

It's a drug induced Coma - the same happened to Karl Wendlinger at Monaco 1994, he was in the coma for 4 weeks, but made a full recovery.
Possum'll be okay. |

It is quite normal for accident victims to be kept in a medically induced coma. This helps the body heal without the rigours we, as humans, place on ourselves when we realise something is not quite right IOW we try and physically fight - the coma ensure the body rests while it is attempting to heal itself.

Channel 10 has just said that the doctors in New Zealand have decided to turn Possums life support system off. Apparently the brain injures are more sevre than first realised.
I am sure all our thoughts and prayers are with Possums wife and young children Last edited by Amaroo Park; 28 Apr 2003 at 07:57. |

Rest in peace mate.
Rally will never be the same without you. Motorsport is at its lowest day. |

Possum Bourne's Condition As At 7pm - Monday 28 April (New Zealand time)
Possum suffered a severe brain injury at the initial incident on Friday 18 April and has been managed very actively until now. The extent and severity of the injury was not fully apparent until the weekend just gone, when ventilation support was decreased but he deteriorated and had to go back onto full support. Evaluation today, including a brain scan, confirms the original injury was very severe and continuing full support is no longer in Possum's best interests. Statement Ends |

RIP Possum. The rally and motorsport world as a whole will be a much sadder place.
My sincere condolences to his wife, children and his many friends and associates. |

Ummm guys - the statements, at this stage, are that he is still alive but on life support....
At this stage there has been no confirmation that the earlier statement I posted is any different to that - I am attempting to find out and will post when and if I can either cofirm the statement or otherwise. |
