Tony Renna to replace Scheckter

http://www.indystar.com/print/articl...-6350-092.html
for the chipster. Hopefully Thomas will hook up with another team. (Panther?)

I think Kelley should have kept Renna over Sharp but Kelley's loss is now Gannassi's gain. Renna is an outstanding talent, IMO

I agree with rush, which has to be a first. Scott Sharp can get no better, whereas every time Renna gets a drive, he impresses. I wouldn't be surprised if he really learns a lot from Scott next year.

Tomas will be considered by Panther, especially as I doubt they'll have 2 rookies. There might be options in other championships as well, maybe F3000 if he still dreams of emulating his dad.

It seems a shame that Tomas is going! Will he still race Texas?

Moreover, does this mean that Dixon is confirmed at Ganassi for 2004?

bad luck for scheckter - good luck for renna, good to see an american driver get a decent drive

shall be interesting to see what tomas does in 2004, for some reason scotty dixon has kicked his butt in 2003 - maybe scott dixon is a brilliant talent who should be in f1 as team-mate to christiano da matta

Renna is awesome , and deserves a good ride , but you gotta feel for Schekter , he certainly has done better this year than his team at Cheever.

so where does he go next year ????

who knows , maybe he is inline to replace Little Al at Kelley ?

anyway great news for Tony renna and I hope he does really well next year.

Scheckter dropped

Scheckter has been dropped by Gannasi next year in IRL. Tony Renna has the drive. Its a shame, but for some reason he hasnt been as stunning as last year, maybe more competition, however in fairness hes not binned it as often either.

Anyway... He may be off to Panther, and if they pair him with Mark Taylor it could be an interesting pairing

Actually his season has been undeniably disappointing: he's been unlucky on some occasions, he stopped destroying cars, but he's been almost sistematically outperformed by his teammate who's however the best IRL driver after Sam (IMO).

In any case, staying in IRL with Panther is a solution I like.
Combining contrasting experiences of his first two years could bring him to good performances.

Hasn't Dixon always been confirmed at Ganassi for next year, he has said since the start of the year he has another year on his contract with Ganassi.

By Renna going to Ganassi, Schekter (presumebly) to panther, does that ensure Al Unser Jr gets another year, as the previous rumour was Renna replacing him at Kelley.

Although he has impressed when he has raced, it still seems like a major gamble by Chip to go with Renna.

So where will Scheckter go now then? It would be depressing to see such a talent as him go to another series.

I think a more accurate statement than "Scheckter dropped" would be "Musical chairs ... de Ferran retires >>> Hornish to Penske >>> Scheckter to Panther >>> Renna to Ganassi"

This is what Autoweek is saying. The deals were signed before, the announcements (and more) will be made with the Texas finally. BTW, Panther may have a second car wit GM and Childress backing.

But that causation chain implies that Thomas chose to leave Ganassi, whereas all reports suggest that it was the other way round. Certainly, Ganassi looks like a better ride than Panther, and Renna a better choice of driver alongside Dixon than Scheckter.

It just didn't seem to be working.

Thomas will do better somewhere else.

Ganassi will do better with Renna.

A good change for all parties.

Its a shame that Scheckter will have to find a 3rd team in as many years.

I would have thought that Ganassi should have given him longer to settle down.

Sounds a lot like what happened with Memo Gidley in CART.

I thought Al Unser Jr. wanted a "farewell tour" but he didn't have sponsorship for next season. There's a rumor that he's going back to CART, but I doubt that will happen.

Anyway, I'm glad that Tony Renna is getting a chance with Ganassi... it seems like he's been picking up a lot of really young new drivers lately, doesn't it? It's cool! I'm sure Tomas won't have much trouble finding a ride and it would be fun to see him at Panther with Alex Barron... I wish...

I was under the impression that TG was paying his salary.

Has Corteco pulled out of Kelley?

I have no idea if TG paid his or anyones salary.

maybe in the early days TG boosted teams to get the top drivers but that kind of thing cant last forever or the series would surely fold.

just look at how much trouble CART is having now with their cashflow because of stuff like that (hopefully they will bounce back)

Either way Tomas should be able to find a decent ride somewhere but im really glad that Renna has picked up a top ride , its now time for him to show what he can really do
