2005 Indy 500 "Pole Day" Pick 'Em Contest

Just like Last year, this will be a separate "Pick 'Em" contest, but will count in the Season Totals for our Regular contest...

That Race Pick 'Em Contest will be posted the week of the Race itself, since a lot can happen between now and 6 p.m. in Indy on May 22.

--------------------------------------------------------------
2005 Indy 500 “Pole Day”
“Pick ‘em” Contest
May 14, 2005

DEADLINE: Saturday, May 14, at Noon (GMT), which is 6 a.m. In “The Racing Capital of the World”

NOTE: These are for “Pole Day” only…and read them carefully, because the Quals format is different at Indy than it is anywhere else in the world. They take the Average Speed of four laps here, and the fastest single lap doesn’t necessarily get set by the pole sitter.

Also, there will be a lot of cars “at speed” that will have to come back on Day Two to Qualify, because they won’t be in the Top 11 average speeds on Pole Day…This new format won’t even fill four rows on Pole Day

PLEASE COPY THE TEMPLATE BELOW FOR YOUR PICKS:

QUALIFYING PICKS:

1. The 2005 Indy 500 Pole Winner: (2 pts)

2. The Pole Winner's “Average Qualifying Speed” (4-Lap Average) (2 pts.)
Carry it out to the one-thousandth place like IRL Scoring does:

NOTE: IF you get BOTH #1 and #2 Correct/Closest, add 2 "Bonus Points"

3.The Driver who will Run the “Single Fastest Qualifying Lap” (2 pts.)

4. The Actual Speed of that “Fast Lap” (2 pts.)

NOTE: IF you get BOTH #1 and #2 Correct/Closest, add 2 "Bonus Points"

5. List the Pole Winner Again, plus the OTHER TEN drivers (in order) who will earn the 11 total spots available in the Field on "Pole Day”: (2 pts for each Driver in correct spot, 1 pt. For correct Driver, but wrong spot)

ROW ONE:
1.
2.
3.

ROW TWO:
1.
2.
3.

ROW THREE:
1.
2.
3.

ROW FOUR:
1.
2.

6. Slowest “Pole Day” Qualifier To Earn a Spot on the “Pole Day” Grid -- 11th Fastest – should be the same as your “Row 4, #2” name - (2 pts.)

7. The Final Driver who gets “Bumped From” or "Just Misses " the 11th Spot on Pole Day (2 pts.)
(He/she will have the 12th fastest 4-lap average on “Pole Day”)

6. Pick Top Honda Qualifier (2 pts)

7. Pick Top Toyota Qualifier (2 pts)

8. Pick Top Chevy Qualifier (2 pts.)

If you've got any questions, feel free to ask them here before Saturday

Good Luck!!!

ok, quick question, what if for example no Chevrolets are in the top 11 on the first day of qualifying, would a chevy with the 13th fastest time but is still unqualified take the points or would nobody get points?

I'm hearing that Buddy Rice will have to rest for 7 days, because he recieved a concussion due to that accident.

That means that he will miss qualifying, and can only start at 23rd I believe. Is that correct?

Tim, any hints on the weather for this weekend? Will the warm weather remain or are things going to cool down Indianapolis way?

Thanks.

The weather is supposed to change from this hot streak, but exactly when it will is not certain...it all depends on a front that is currently strung east to west....

It is going to cause daily chances of showers or possible thunderstorms into Saturday, possibly Sunday

However, once the front does get pushed through, it will be at least 15-20 degrees cooler than what it has been this week....and no one will have any set-up data for that kind of weather....

Thus, Saturday could either get rained out, or enough windows to get people qualified, but Sunday's group in cooler weather could have cars faster than the Pole Day group qualifiers.

Hope that helps...

For now, anyway, that Front I mentioned is to the south of us and the air temps are in the low-mid 60s this afternoon with a fairly brisk wind from the ENE (15-20 mph)...

The front is suposed to come back north tomorrow with temps up in the 80s again and a strong chance of storms....

For now, they are saying rain Saturday morning, then dry in the afternoon with highs in the mid-60s....

But the weather has been changing a lot here in the past two weeks....a 50-mile swing one direction or another by that Front could change the entire forecast...

Exactly....

That is why I listed that particular question that way and specified that it would be the 12th fastest driver in the parenthesis....and also why I noted "11th Fastest" in the previous question....

Just for such a scenario...

It rains here in May...thus I wanted it to be as clear as possible...

Here are today's results:

Tim was the only one to pick Tony Kanaan as the Pole Winner

GP Racer was closest to the Pole Average: Actuall 227.566, GP's Pick 227.500

Nice Pick!

No one had Danica for the Fastrest Lap

Marcus got the points for closest to the actual lap -- Actual 227.860, Marcus 228.101

For the top Picks, Tim had Kanaan as the Pole, plus Sharp in 3rd, Dario in 6th, Meira in 7th and Scheckter in 11th as well as Danica, Helio, Matsurra and Hornish in the top 12...14 points.

Jock had 3 in proper places plus 5 others in the top 12 for 11 pts.

Stmookey had 10 pts with 2 in the right spots

GP had 9 of the top 12 but non in the right spots

Dr Disque had 7 of the top 12 with Vitor in the right spot for 8 pts.

Marcus had 7 of the 12 but none in the right spots

Tim & Jock 25 had Scheckter in the 11 th spot, and since it was a separate question, I counted the two popints...It specified points for the 11ths spot...I also would have awarded the 22nd spot as well since it changed due to weather, and no one picked that driver.

No one had Bruno as the 12th driver, or they would have gotten 2 more points per the format, and no one had Barron there, either.

Tim Had Tony Kanaaan as the Top Honda

Jock 25, Stmookey and Marcus had Hornish as the top Toyota

No one had Buddy Lazier as the top Chevy

Totals for the Session:

1. Tim N. 20 - pts.
2. Jock25 - 16 pts.
3. stmookey - 12 pts.
4. GP Racer - 11 pts.
(tie) Marcus - 11 pts.
6. Dr Disque - 8 pts.
