Toyota Teams in NASCAR

Now that Toyota has announced they are moving up to Cup and Busch competition next season there is some news on their teams.

-Bill Davis Racing will run Toyotas (#22 and #23)
-Michael Waltrip Racing will field a team (#55)
-Red Bull Racing- new team led by Marty Gaunt formerly of Penske's team and with Kevin Harvick already rumoured to be a driver

There will be some more information on the teams later tonight after a Toyota press conference at Lowe's Motor Speedway.

The official announcement was made last night. Here is Toyota's official press release:

There are also a lot of pictures of the cars for each team available at this site.

It looks like Toyota won't be spending much time in the Busch series. They only plan to run maybe 4-6 cars in the next few seasons. They don't have a lot of interest in that particular series. It'll probably be mostly driver development entries for the three teams that are running in the Cup series.

Dale Jarrett and UPS may be on a Toyota next season. UPS is rumoured to be going where Jarrett goes and if Jarrett doesn't return to the #88 he may be in line for a Toyota ride.

It also rumoured they may have offered to buy Robby Gordon and his team out. For some reason I don't think this would happen, because knowing him he is probably considerably happier driving for himself.

What engines are Toyota using? I can't imagine they have ever had pushrod V8s of that kind of capacity.

Toyotas engines will be an offshoot of whatever engines they use in the Trucks. They don't build regular production pushrod V8 engines and I don't think they ever have. I think they took the basic parameters of NASCAR engines and developed an entirely new architecture from that.
