WTCC goes virtual
The FIA WTCC will go virtual. The Swedish game producers SimBin have recently acquired license for the World Touring Car Championship. SimBin have produced titles such as GTR and GT Legends, highly popular racing simulators.
- We are very proud to have been given this prestigious assignment - having in mind that the FIA Organisation only has three world championships, Formula One, WRC and WTCC, said Henrik Roos SimBin CEO and former professional race driver. - This is an agreement that the team and myself have worked hard to achieve, actually since 2004, and it is most inspiring to finally have reached the goal. WTCC gives us the opportunity to use our combined experience within motor sports and game development to the fullest. It will be very exciting to work closely with the 25 teams, car manufacturers and Eurosport/KSO, Roos continued. - We have looked for a game developer with the experience and knowledge to take the intense and adrenaline pumping experience of WTCC racing into the world of video gaming. SimBin with its motor sport background and excellent track record from it´s previous game titles will secure that our racing fans as well as gamers can expect a WTCC game of top quality. The results are expected to be enjoyed on PC and Next gen consoles, Jaques Behar, KSO Chairman and Eurosport executive comments. - WTCC is a completely new challenge with its own positioning: bumper to bumper, action packed, hard hitting. WTCC features race cars of similar power, road holding and aerodynamics that are based on real street cars which people can recognize. This will allow us to create intense games that attract a wide audience - just like the real life WTCC races, Tomas Karlsson, SimBin COO, explains. No exact date for the release is set. Though SimBin is currently working hard to get GTR2 ready for release this summer, so we cannot expect anything before that release. |

Yeah, whilst everyone sings the praises of GTR, I found the game to be merely "OK". I thought the physics were mostly good, and the game overall was OK, however I really wasn't keen on the graphics engine. They were using an old Direct X 7 engine, ancient considering we are up to Direct X 9C and Direct X 10 is rapidly approaching.
Thankfully, GTR2 will use a Direct X 9 graphics engine, so this should improve things measurably. I just hope this WTCC game uses it too. |

On which season is the game based? If I am correct GTR2 will have cars from 2004.

Yep, WTCC is a game I cant wait to play.
However, now Simbin have the licence, I guess that shoots down in flames any hopes of Codemasters incorporating the WTCC into its TRD series. |

The physics engine I guess will be ported over from GTR / GTL / GTR2, albeit with differing handling values. There really isn't much Simbin needs to do apart from some track modelling, car skinning, and physics tweaks. |

About time someone got hold of a licence to do a WTCC game. The Toca series have been really good but they've been the only games along those lines. Will be nice to recreate Andy Priaulx's title triumph....better start saving for my PS3 now then!

I've played a lot of racing games in my time, and I have to say that Race Driver 3 cannot be described as Arcade. Ok, maybe it hasn't got quite the plethora of setup options that something like GTR racing has, but how many people who arn't "Grognards" actually use half those options in GTR anyway? Race Driver 3 can be as simple or complicated as you want it to be. Which is more that can be said for GTR which can only really be complicated. However, Simbin it appears has seen the light and if GT Legends is anything to go buy then they also are heading more towards the "Codemaster's way" of doing things. |

To be honest I hope they'll won't go the Codemaster way. TOCA 1 and TOCA 2 were really good but they ****ed it up with the Race Driver games. I hope the WTCC game CAN BE complicated if you want to.

Some of the cars handle quite realistically in TRD3 pro sim mode, whereas others handle terribly.
The Clios handle very well and authentically in TRD3, whereas some of the single seaters, and I think the Honda NSX's handle woefully. |
