Rules and Regs for 2007

I have just been reading the new rules and regulations on the Official Formula 1 Website (http://www.formula1.com/insight/rulesandregs/).

With regards to lapped cars overtaking the leaders and safety car...does this mean that they will have to complete a whole lap to return to the back of the field?

Also the GPS marshalling system sounds interesting..and the medical warning light! Is it also an indicator of a good crash? Villeneuve would have loved it

I wonder how long it will be before they have a panel of judges to rate crashes...Artistic interpretation, technical difficulty etc... It would be like Ice dancing!!!

How are they going to govern the "no pitting once the safety car is out" rule?

What if a driver dives into the pits, then seconds later the safety car is deployed?

Or what if a driver is already in the pits, and the safety car is deployed?

Or if a driver has recieved the instruction to come in, then the safety car is deployed, but isn't told by their pit wall until 2 seconds later? Will the driver then have to (dangerously?) swerve out of the pitlane feeder road and back onto the track?

Given the new lights on the dash arrangement, if the yellow is on, there is a chance that the safety car will be deployed. The teams will be informed by race control that the pit will be closed presumably in the same moment that they are informed the safety car is scrambled.

If the driver is already in the pits then it's his luck as to whether he can get out before the train of cars catches up to the safety car, or whether the pit exit will be closed and he is held at the end of the pit lane until the train of car passes...remember the lapped cars will get shuffled out out of the way, so the penalty in terms of time behind the leader wont be as bad as it would have been in the past when the race goes green again.

I'd presume that there will be some form of commit system in place, a point identified at each circuit, with the race director or whomever having to decide whether a driver was commited or chancing their arm.
A punishment of a drive through under Green a likely result of wrong doing, that's how other series which employ a closed pits system work.

So what happens if a diver actually runs out of fuel because a safety car is out over the few laps he was due to come in?

The chances are remote, the pit is only closed until the train has formed behind the safety car, which should be done within the first lap it's deployed. At that point the pit lane would be opened.

What it means is that teams would have to consider the safety car into thier fuel calculations....in other words never run a driver below say 2 laps of fuel before bringing him into the pits.

Dudley has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!

The pits aren't completely closed, just if you come in you'll get a penalty.

I read that only refuelling is not allowed during the time between SC deploying moment and the moment as all cars are behind. So damage repairs are allowed.

Refuelling would give 10 second stop/go penalty then.

That makes sense for me. If there is incident between two cars which causes SC (like Montoya/Rosberg crash at Canada last year), the one who continues can pit for repairs without penalty.
