Panoz GTR1 &GTS

Has anyone got any pictures of the GTR-1 testing for the 1000km race. Apparantly it has some new aero bits and is quite a bit different from the original car.

In a recent interview Panoz said the new GTS car would be based on the GTR-1. Could the car competing at the LM 1000km be a development hack for the new Audi engined Panoz GTS car.

Does nobody else find it strange there has been so much effort put into updating the GTR1, rather than just running the old car. Afterall it is only supposed to be a last farewell to the fans.

There must be some developments put into this car that will be seen on the new GTS car?

It's my understanding there isn't an old coupe. They converted chassis #3 back to a GTR1.It was orginally an GTR1, then converted to an LMP1. Now back.

Yep it was, but lets not forget that the GTS cars have moved on signifcantly since the Panoz last raced, and with the new breed of GTS cars coming in next season such as the new Maserati its debatable as to whether or not the Panoz would be faster.

By the way, didnt the GT1 cars weight 900kg? If the car intends to run in GTS it will weigh 1100kg like the rest of the GTS machines, therefore making it a little bit slower than it will be at the LM 1000KM meeting in Novemeber where its running to the GTP regulations.

As I understand it the new GTS car will not have a carbon chassis like the GTR-1 but will be based on the new GT Espernate chassis. The body will resmeble that of the GTR-1 however.

The car was expected early next year, but the arrival of the new generation GTS cars seems to have delayed the project, in order to way up the opposition first.

And yes Saleen the GT1 cars did run at 900kg. Theres been much talk of increasing the speed of GTS cars to compete for overall wins, but the ACO have now said any GTS car wishing to go for overall wins can enter LMGTP (and take advantage of the 900kg weight etc.) and any other aero mods. So we may well see the 'new' Audi engined GTR-1 compete for overall wins in LMGTP eventually.

By way of example the GTR1 ran 1:17.4 in qual for the Laguna round of the 1998 FIAGT race about a second off the AMG Mercs. The Prodrive 550 ran 1:22.35 for pole at Laguna this year. The GTR should more than hold its own against a GTS car would be my guess.

The advantage of the GTR-1 is its high downforce aerodynamics. Which of course will only be matched by cars like the new purpose built Masarati GTS car.

The cars will be for customers only.

But if you could get the likes of DAMS running cars they would be up there with the Masaratis/Ferrari's etc.

Now that is how a car should look (even though I don't like front-engine cars (McLaren-Mercedes )).

The way I see things, this "Supercar" rules might ressurect some cars from the past (anyone wanting to race a 911GT1 or a McLaren (with the 6,1 BMW engine )

GTR-1s final fling in the LM 1000K not PLM. A still think its being used as a development hack for the new GTS cars.

Panoz should race this car full time. The LMP-01 has always been a bit on the **** side.

This is the proper Panoz.
