I honestly thought this whole Harbour Bridge stunt was a waste of time and money.
If you want to attract new people to the sport and enable them to see these cars up close, then hold the event somewhere where they can do this, not 100's of meters above everyone where they cant see whats going on. I thought the Melbourne event in the streets was much better, and I beleive people would have got a lot more out of this. |

Channel 9 (Aus) said he did about 180km/h over the Harbour Bridge, to quote them, they said "Webber was travelling at twice the Bridge's speed limit and only half the top speed of the car" or something to that effect.
I heard once that an old McLaren holds (or used to hold) the unofficial lap record around Bathurst, anyone know if there's truth to that? (I realise the implications of an F1 car 'trying' to go around Bathurst, I just want to know if this is false or not) Last edited by Cyntech; 3 Mar 2005 at 00:36. |

yes you are correct about a mclaren holding the bathurst lap record.
but it wasnt an F1 car. it was a Mclaren sportscar driven by neil Allen ![]() |

Marcus, it was an open-wheeler... from memory (and therefore highly suspect) an M10... there are a heap of anecdotes about that car and that lap in some of the nostalgic foraa in other places... apparently he could've gone faster... but may have been a little concerned about the structural integrity of the thing... oh , and the lap was a 2:09 - something in 1970.... the closest the tin-tops ever got on the old circuit was a 2:13.85 in 1984...

Ok sorry , I was under the impression it was a sportscar
maybe it was an F5000 car i believe allen was a top driver in that series. I do know however it was not an F1 car , so perhaps F5000 ? |

Not sure if the McLaren was an F5000 or competing in the "Tasman" spec used in the Gold Star of the day.... while it was a bit before my time, it remains a pity I never got to see that era of motorsport. |

Rossi - I believe it was designed to 1) get Sydney & the bridge on international news bulletins 2) produce some pretty pictures/footage 3) provide a distraction for (NSW state premier) Bob Carr
Cyntech, the Neil Allen McLaren M10B F5000 "used to" hold the official lap record of 2:09.7. Whether that "stands for all time" since the circuit revised I am not sure (technically I suppose so) but the revision added length (not much granted) and an extra 3 corners (of which 1 makes very little difference). The current lap record is 2:08.67 by Garth Tander (Commodore V8 Supercar 2003) although the pole position quali time was 2:06.86 by Greg Murphy. For comparison, 1997 Super Touring - Jason Plato, Renault Laguna 2:16.8; Carrera Cup 2004 - Alex Davison 2:12.53; FFord - Jordan Ormsby 2002 Van Diemen RF93 2:24.13. Harbour Bridge drive
Does anyonebody know of a site where you can get a decent picture of Mark Webber drive across the Sydney Harbour Bridge. F1 live has some but I am looking for some pic of him driving across the bridge itself.
