why no terrestrial tv
Seems a shame, i'm sure it would have got a big audience, but because it's a brand new series and risky to really take off, looks like only pay channels worldwide are broadcasting it.

It would be interesting to know what the Sky viewing figures were. Anybody know?
I personally think the terrestrial TV channels have failed to see the potential and that had they took the series on, it would of been great for them and the sport. I wonder if they will judge the Grand Prix Masters series in the same way. I think that has huge viewer potential aswell. Mansell is still a huge draw in this country. Infact, I think it would of been cool to see Mansell get involved with A1. |

This is off the subject of the thread, but follows on from the above.
GPM sounds like A1GP for has beens. Personally I don't see the attraction of guys old enough to know better strapping on cars with no driving aids, when their own reflexes aren't what they used to be. The young guys in A1GP have shown that their cars are a handful without driver aids and I believe the GPM cars are supposed to have even more power. No I don't think GPM is for me. |

I read the same story as you somewhere - it might even have been 480,000, but I can't find a link either... Whatever, it was a very high figure.

Thanks for that.
So if it were on terrestrial TV, the viewing figures would presumably be a great deal higher. Now the series has had it's honeymoon, it will be interesting to see where the figures go for the next few races. I suspect they will initially drop off, and then slowly build again over the coming months. We'll see. Looks like A1 has serious TV potential and could well capture the imagination of hardcore and casual motorsport fans. As for GPM...personally I can't wait. Senior events are common in many sports, so why not motorsport. As long as it is competitive within it's own format, I think it could well be a success. |

1/10 of the population apparently has Sky sports so by extrapolation terrestrial would be 4.5 million. However it tends to be young males that have sky sports access and that is usually what motor racing is aimed at so you could probably half that figure to say 2 million if it was terrestrial.

Sky's actual viewing figures for the race programme were 245,000.
They only get 480,000 by adding together the figures for the preview show, qualifying and races, including the repeats. That means that effectively it got fewer viewers than F3, which is shown on Channel 4 before breakfast on a saturday, and Formula Renault or Formula BMW which are shown on ITV at around 1am on a Sunday morning. |

Thanks foxy.
245,000 is still impressive though for a satelite pay channel. Ch 4 gets viewers who want the telly on, but want to avoid things in Bungalows. |

I watched the coverage on Sky and thought it was very well presented and well put together. Graphic etc were all made to grab peoples attention and, as someone said to me yesterday, if Sky do for motorsport what they have done for football, we are heading in the right direction.
I honestly think that both Sky and ITV have done more to attract viewers to motorsport than the BBC ever did. |

I heard something on the Autosport Radio Show last weekend that the BBC might have picked up highlights of A1GP.
