I think it might of been a 2 litre sports car or possibly a F2 car. I also think that Tony Sugden is now in his 70's!

Yep, it was either a F2 (the old 2.5litre format) or a Formula Atlantic car under the skin if I remember. I'm sure someone will correct us.
It disappeared into the distance when Ric Wood wasn't there to snap at his heels.... And even though Tony's in his 70's, he's still on the ball. You never forget how to ride a bike!! Rob. |

Some great info on here guys!
Racing 59, in late 2003 when i was researching some old special saloons, the Kitten was loacked away in a shed so yues it still very much exists. They might nedd some persuasion to get it out as their Jade supersports was their main project and the Kitten requires a strip down and a bit of attention. Hope that helps? You'd best get in touch with them to get the full SP though. Couple of other cars that would be nice and relevant are the Grp 5 320 that is the subject of Ian Becketts thread, the one that Brian Chatfield has/had? Also Terry Nicholls Gartrac Capri, that he ran in special saloons and then thunder saloons. I have a feeling this was an ex Stuart Graham Grp 1 car that he 'caniballised' yet still ended up with a pretty gorgeous racer. It's either in the middle of a restoration by one of Ric Woods customers or it's in the middle of someone's back garden?! Someone will know i'm sure! Then there's that excellent Escort RSBDG that the Minton brothers ran in the 80's, then brought it back into competition a few years later for the Northern Sports Saloons after a shunt enduced rebuild?, or did someone like Rod Birley or Julian Swayland buy it? The one that Bob Trotter ran with a Rover V8 was massively quick as well. Either way those 2 Escorts would be good entries? |

Weren't the Morris brothers (or someone else) rebuilding their 309?
And one of Rod's old cars is still around doing trackdays, isn't it? |

Smart with a V12? Merlin or Griffin?
I'm sure there's room if you mount it transverse! I'm compiling the list of possibles. I'd like to see more "big bangers" with V8's, but then, I'm biassed! Rob. |

Don't know, but it wouldn't be eligible for thius series would it?
His 'Black Thunder' 7.0 Sierra would though - the one he shared with Geoff Farmer in 1990/91? Dunno if that's still around. BTW, I came across what may have been Terry Nichools old Gartrac car on a car sales website - it was an old link but it was in France in sort of gulf blue and orange, Ad stated it was ex Graham/Rouse Grp 1 car? This may be the one that Ric Wood once mentioned that he was going to strip down and restore to more original 'Faberge' shape though. I'm sure Mr Woodman has his MK 1 Cologne Capri ready to race as well - he was sourcing a proper engine a couple of years ago? Other cars that are worth tracking down assuming that they haven't been broken up and returned to original single seater/sportscar profile are things like: Tony Davies Transpeed Firenza The Jim Mensley Honda Legend The ex Brodie/Birley Starion The 'Stars and Sripes' Manta-Chevy that Nick Oatway pedalled The Ecosse Manta that Hugh Chalmers and David Leslie ran nicknamed 'Bendy Bus' That's just a few big bangers that would be excellent runners in the top 2 classes i'd guess. |

Not sure on either point i'm afraid! Someone's bound to know though.
Is that the same Ron Cumming who ran an AC '3000M' hybrid and latterly an Esprit in Northern GT's in the '80's/'90's? |

Yes, he also ran a Lancia Statos bodied Formula 2 March in the early 90s then mid to late 90s he won Formula Libre races in the March, then bought a Footwork F1 car and broke the Knockhill lap record then went across to Ireland and now races Lolas, or so I've heard, working closely with Martin Biranne.

That's right, i'd forgottten he had an Arrows later on!
Yeah when he had the AC he was up against the likes of Jeff Wilson's Cosworth V6 BMW M1, Jim McGaughay's Lancia-Toleman BMW F2, Tony Sugden and Jeff Farmer in Esprit's and others in mid 80's. Did Ron race a Sierra or something in Thundersaloons later on? I can't remember him in the Legend though |

The Manta got sold and never reappeared, iirc. Someone must have it somewhere, but unless anyone can get in touch with Nick Oatway and find out who bought it....
Black Thunder eventually became the base for a car in the NW Saloons, and very little remains of the original. The "essence" is still there, tho. There was a thread in the club racing forum about it not long ago. |

If its the same one, Alastair Cunningham raced it at Knockhill and Ingliston in the early 90s, I always was impressed at the speed of both the Manta and Ron's Legend! In actual fact, they werent as fast as my Imp! My Dad and I saw Alastair Cunningham filling up his Porsche Cayenne last year, he still has the car and is willing to bring it out again for a little play, when he stopped racing it, it was in the latter day Gulf colours, ie Metallic Blue not powder blue! Ron's Legend was black and Gold with Custom Furniture sponsoring, very like the Stratos. He did race a Sierra Cosworth now and again at Knockhill, but it was nothing special! A few podiums as I can remember back in 98 and 99, when we owned the Stratos bodywork, with a Tiga Sports 2000 chassis and Cossie Engine! |

Would John Cross' Focus V8 be eligible for this? I know it's a much newer car but it's still along the same lines (and it's good to watch with the quad tailpipes flaming away merrily )
