We need Rallycross DVD's!
We Rallycross fans know it is hard to get coverage of our sport, especially from the older days. So I was wondering would we be willing to pay for a nice compilation DVD or double DVD with the entire ERC period up to 2005? If there is a demand who could we ask? I've hear Harald Sachweh has it's fingers in the TV rights, but don't know for sure... I admire those who taped all ERC rounds or has the right channels to recieve it...
Also how about a compilation DVD fully loaded with high quality pictures taken by photographers, either a DVD per photographer or a combined one of multiple photographers... Would love to see a compilation of Johnny Loix and or Eddi Laumanns! Especially from the last 20 years! |

All seasons on just one dvd?
There are plenty of videos from the old days AND the present days. The complete Group B days and unlimited Group A days are extensively covered, plus some seasons before and after. Those are recalled as the heyday of Rallycross. It's not from every season indeed, but that's because there are many different rights holders over the varying years. I also don't really know if they even shot every complete season? It'll be an absolute crime to acquire all the commercial rights on all the important years AND all the mastertapes AND the time consuming effort to compile them in something sensible. Anyway let's be real, people don't even buy the present dvd's. Look at the counter on Chris Courteyns ebay shop. Only 20 sold so far, even though it's been advertised on some big websites. He might have sold some more outside ebay but still. Unless you already have the rights on the mastertapes it's simply not economicly viable to produce them. Huge credit to anyone that tries to be so noble and I'd be the first to buy from them, but there won't be many more people I'm afraid! The number sold will hardly reach the hundreds and that's being optimistic. Another look at the British Rallycross DVD from 2004. 250 produced and how many sold? It's still anything but sold out! |

Maybe you're right but I don't hope so!
I believe that a compilation DVD especially from the last 20 years would be sold. It is cheaper than to buy 20 bad quality video's... I think most Rallycross fans would want one in their collection, especially with all the diversity... But you're right the copyright will be a nightmare to sort! But I do believe all years have been filmed more or less... SVT24 showed them all I think... But I have never seen 1996 on TV! It is also a shame that official internet coverage (TV, Results, Times, News) is still very poor in comparison with WRC and F1 and since they do have good TV coverage they actually need it less than Rallycross does! I would not buy an UK DVD either as there are too less rounds and too less DIV1 contenders. But 20 years of hardcore ERC Rallycross, wow that would be different cake! The problem with Chris Corteyn is that he is unreachable on his e-mail adress and the other problem is Ebay, I want one but I am not interested in dealing via Ebay. If I find his correct adress I will contact him and transfer the money and he can send it! DVD's should be sold on Rallycross meetings and by internet companies (or an official Rallycross dealer) Let's put my hopes on the picures DVD then! |

The last years it has gone a little better, but the FIA or any other governing body is not allowed to hold any commercial rights anymore. They were the ones that could make attractive deals as they didn't need huge profits. Today it's all about commercial value. I don't know who holds the rights now, but I can't expect anything less than that he wants his money returned. Quote:

My problem with internet companies and Ebay is loggin in and the need for a creditcard, I don't have one, I don't want one...
I contacted Chris way back before the auction on Ebay and never got any result so far... Nowadays I have found other ways to watch Rallycross... I've heard from the TV rights back then from most of the drivers, by that time there was talk of a alternative series without FIA, Ecclestone or whomever interfering... I really believe there precense will destroy the longtime future of the sport, people have choise today to watch what they like.. I know the BRC has good races, but most Europeans wouldn't want one. Too much from the same... To be honest I am most interested in seeing the modified classes, especially DIV1, don't care about Mini's or so, despite how advanced they probably are... Sorry for the Mini drivers |

TV-Media AS (the former "Kanal 3 TV" of Norwegian Morten Berg) some years ago produced a set of 4 VHS tapes with all highlights of the ERC's 1984 to 1995 (12 consecutive years!). They are still available. The company is perhaps willing to put the stuff on DVD's (as they did with their Martin Schanche 25 years history) - but for sure only if there will be some money to earn from plenty of orders... |

Look here: http://stores.ebay.com/RALLY-ACTION - as you possibly spelled his name wrong.

Maybe these are the guys you should contact about producing low volume Rallycross DVD's, it's what they specialise in it seems.
http://www.rallyfilmsreloaded.co.uk/ We really need some classic rallycross action on DVD because lets face it, VHS is almost obsolescent now. Seems this company may also help in securing rights etc. |

I think there is only a limited market for each individual years championship DVD's, but if there were three compilation DVD's with the best of the 70's 80's and 90's, they could be targeted at a much wider audience. I think there would be a great demand for these.
There are two DVD's available in the MVC catalogue, they are just listed as Rallycross Review 1994 & Rallycross Review 1995. I dosn't say anything about them, I don't know wether they are European or British. I have ordered the 95 one, so when I get it, I will do a review. |

@ silver bullet: "the best of the 70's"? I do not remember any people taking pics of the ERC series then, only national companies showing up occasionally. The Dutch AVRO covered each round of the NLC (plus the Dutch ECR's) for many years, but the ERC had no proper coverage at all. From 1984 on my friend Norwegian Morten Berg and its Kanal 3 TV followed the entire series for over a decade (as mentioned above) and TV-Media AS still holds the rights for the pics of at least 12 consecutive years.

Maybe they should try distributing some of their DVD's/VHS through someone like Duke Video or a UK based Rally/Motorsport memorabilia website. I'd like to buy the Schanche DVD and ERC compilations (preferably on DVD) but can't navigate the Norwegian website. |

For the 70's I was thinking more of the coverage we used to see on 'World Of Sport' and 'Grandstand' of UK rallycross. There was also some great 80's UK footage. I think it was from Paul Hargreaves and World Action Sports Productions.

Just found out today (for the Finnish RX ace of the 1980s Jukka Pelttari) that the Norwegians offer their ERC highlights 1978–1995 on four DVDs now. Last time I’ve visited their website they still did them on four VHS tapes only. However, from tomorrow on they are on holidays for nearly a month. |

RallyCross Action was originally published in four VHS tapes in 1996. A total of 360 minutes hardpakket with action from RallyCross golden age. RallyCross Action follows the European Championships in rallycross from 1978 until 1995. Martin Schanche first EM-gold on Estering in Germany in 1978 is to - as are all the other høyepunktene and the drama. Førerprofiler, there were many during this period of European rallycross. RallyCross Action has with all the classic duel between Martin Schanche, Olle Arnesson, Matti Alamäki, Franz Wurzen, John Welch, Piet Dam and many others.
Bonusspor DVD version of RallyCross Action also includes a unique bonustrack for the whole 30 minutes, namely the TV program that was designed to TVNorge in connection with Martin Schanche 50-anniversary in 1996. Works out at £49.45 ish from currency converter I want a copy Last edited by M.Lowe; 24 Jun 2008 at 21:47. |
