From November 1965 through August 1991 the Summers brothers held at 409.1 mph with their car Goldenrod the absolute record of piston engine cars. Goldenrod remains the only normally aspirated car to run over 400 mph. By the time Bob Summers drove Goldenrod to a new record, Goldenrod had made a total of eight timed runs which included four runs at over 400 mph. The record was set with the 7th and 8th timed runs. The day after they set the record, the Summers brothers replaced the "mailbox" air scoops designed by Chrysler engineers with SMALLER air scoops designed by aerospace engineers. On its ninth timed run, Goldenrod clocked 425 mph through the mile.

There's an article about the brothers and Goldenrod in the July issue of Thoroughbred and Classic Cars magazine - the one with the oh-so-beautiful Miuras on the cover.
