[WTCC] Honda to enter the championship?

The Honda Petrobras Argentine TC2000 team wants to join the WTCC in 2011 or 2012. The car would be the City (sedan version of the Jazz/Fit), which began to be built in Brazil a few months ago, or the Civic sedan. Drivers would be José MarÃ*a "Pechito" López or Leonel PernÃ*a (2nd in 2009 TC2000) and Carlos "Cacá" Bueno (2006, 2007 and 2009 Stock Car Brazil champion). The project is supported by the Argentine and Brazilian divisions of Honda, and they are looking for support from Japan.

Honda did not support Colciago with JAS and Thompson with N-Technology during past seasons. I doubt they will give money to such a project.

That was Honda Europe, this supposedly is backed by Honda's South American arm which is a different company with a different budget.

The story has been floating around for a while now but it just makes no sense to me. I don't understand why a successful TC2000 team would want to switch to WTCC. I didn't think WTCC was that popular in South America?

But if they have support already from Honda Brazil/Argentina they wouldn't necessarily need Japan's backing, maybe just their blessing.

Keep in mind Honda's situation has changed. At the time of the JAS and N.tech cars they were still involved in F1.
