Are there any results on the web?
The HSCC site is a bit out of date, not even the Aug 1st results are up. |

Race 2 - Historic Formula Junior
This race took place under cloudy skies with the track still wet from an earlier shower. Although Jon Milicevic took pole in his Cooper T59 he was unable to take the start. Mark Woodhouse won (car 84, Lotus 20/22) with John Fyda second (car 54, Lotus 22). Third was taken by Derek Walker who drove his Terrier (car 4) from 19th on the grid. A few photos below.

Race 3 - 70s Road Sports
A fairly small grid of just 11 cars from an entry of 13. Only 10 were classified as finishing the race which took place on a damp but drying track. The top three places went as per the grid starting positions although the top two had briefly swapped positions from the start for the first few laps. So it ended - 1. Julian Barter (car 1, TVR 3000M) 2. Charles Barter (car 24, Datsun 240Z) and 3. Howard Bentham (car 41, Lotus Elan).

Race 4 - Historic Formula Ford
Again held under cloudy skies with a damp track, this race saw a fairly high attrition rate with seven of the 21 starters falling by the wayside. The top five qualifiers all finished in the top five but with only the winner Darren Burke (car 64, Macon MR8) holding station and setting fastest lap on the last lap. Benn Simms (car 5, Alexis Mk 14) was second, with Ian Ashley (car 62, Lola T200) claiming the final podium place.

Race 5 - Historic Touring Cars
By the now the track was only slightly damp and the crowd were treated to a very entertaining race with only three non-finishers from the 23 starters. Steve Shuttleworth (car 38, Ford Lotus Cortina) started on pole but dropped back, eventually finishing just off the podium positions.
Roy Stephenson (car 28, Ford Mustang) finished third having led for the first few laps before being overtaken by the eventual winner Roger Godfrey (car 85, Austin Mini Cooper) who did well considering he had dropped to seventh place on lap one. These two were split by Mike Smith (car 80, Morris Mini Cooper). A few photos: |

From some-one quite involved with Croft and helping with the off track entertainment last weekend, may I say that the grin is still firmly fixed on my face! What a fabulous event both on track and off. The racing was excellent particularly, for me, the Historic Touring Cars. To see slip angles of that magnitude lap after lap - well you had to be there to see it.
Bearing in mind this was the third HSCC event in 3 weeks may I say a big thank you to all those who did travel but don't forget that the strong Scottish contingent, and those from the North East, do it every event. This has got to be an annual event. |

Race 6 - Historic F5000 & F2 (Derek Bell Trophy)
Due to the nature of these cars this event was eagerly anticipated and despite a small turn-out of 10 cars, 8 of which finished, it didn't disappoint. To see these running around Croft was quite special.
Pole-man Richard Evans (car 9) led for the first eight laps and set the fastest lap in his Chevron B40 before dropping out leaving Darwin Smith (car 10, March 722) to take the flag. He was followed home by Frank Lyons (car 74, Gurney Eagle) and John Crowson (car 63, Chevron B40). |

I agree - it was a wonderful weekend. The number of spectators, especially on Sunday was very surprising, particularly as there was the counter-attraction of the Tall Ships Race at Hartlepool.
From the point of view of someone who camped in the paddock (and reinforcing the views of my Historic FF2000 flock), the facilities do need to be improved if it is to become an annual event. More showers are needed, and there needs to be more power in the paddock. Most people liked the circuit, and the sideshows were very enjoyable, particularly the remote-controlled jet aircraft that performed on Saturday evening. If the organisers want to make it a mini-Goodwood in the North-East, then they need to attend to the few small details that would ensure that it is near the top of the list for HSCC racers, along with the Brands Superprix and the Oulton Park Gold Cup |

Race 7 - Classic Racing Cars
A reasonable grid of 14 starters with two non-finishers including Alan Fairbrother (car 86) who spun out going into Sunny-In but was to re-appear in the second of these races the next day.
The first three finished in the order of the grid starting positions - 1st Ian Gray (car 2, Brabham BT16), 2nd Tony Keele (car 36, Palliser WDB3) and 3rd Jon Waggitt (car 74, Brabham BT18). |

Keep the photos coming, organisers take note what the drivers are saying. A lot seemed to like the track and the event, make the improvements to the facilities and the event will hopefully become a permanent fixture.

Croft onwards
I agree, I spoke to the club chairman about it yesterday.
I had not been for 5 years making it again a novelty. It took me 7 hours to get up there [traffic was poor] and 6 to get back. in comparison Oulton Park is 4.5 - 5.5. [from Calais Spa is only 5] The paddock is fine, clean and access is easy. the lack of water, electricity and a being woken by sheep makes the place feel 'primative' by most standards. This is not a complaint, rather knowing that after 3 days on site with a cold fridge and hot water, the transporter will start as the batteries are fresh and charged. An electric hook-up makes all the difference. The track is quick and sufficiently long to sustain interest, even after 20 plus laps, the tramac is tired and very bumpy in places, fine if you run your car quite soft, but a trip to the dentist if you run a later S/S i suspect. The marshalls were a delightful bunch as were the 'army boys'. There was some kind of event on Saturday night, unpublicised and no one I spoke to knew anything about it. Some food and drinks [paid for is fine] laid on would help gel the visitors. With Sunday morning spent daydreaming as nothing can happen till 12, the event utilises only 1.5 track days of a full weekend. similar conditions apply at other circuits, but at the GC for example there is a full day Monday to stay over for. In short a nice event and credit to the HSCC and the Croft promotors. I would attend again, but I suspect along with a number of others not till it returns to the - oh yes, Croft that was fun - I ought to go back there - status of a couple of years gap. JFW |
