I was talking to someone today in regards to building on other than flat ground, and realistically it wouldn't surprise me if there is limited quantity of houses. Teh area might have been better used for a community centre, built around the current facilities?

Too late now I guess!

If you want to shed another tear or two and see what Amaroo looks like today, then go to Google Maps:

http://maps.google.com.au

And search for: Amaroo Park Drive

Click the 'Satellite' option to get an overhead view.

Then left click the red 'balloon' and select 'Street View' for images at ground level.

Search for 'Oran Park Raceway' for one last view of OP.

"Sydney University anthropologist Stephen Juan said people wanted to buy an image in the midst of a big property development, and streets named after racing heroes were sure to be a hit among motoring enthusiasts"

Nothing about this whole abomination is a hit with me. I doubt 99% of the people living in the new town will know what the hell "Oran Park" was.

A link to NearMap which allows you to go back in history (well at least to last year) and see the gradual changes over the past year or so at Oran Park as it's slowly demolished.

http://www.nearmap.com/?ll=-34.00583...h&nmd=20100711

Just click on each of the dots along the top right of the screen to go forward or back in time.

It's actually kind of sad to see the place being bulldozed like this.

Make sure you have a Sat Nav when visting Oran Park Town. With streets named after race drivers I'm sure the street signs will get souvenired pretty quick!

I totally agree! I grew up 20 minutes from OP & my earliest childhood memories are of sitting on the hill watching the legends of the sport give me a thrill no Saturday morning cartoon show ever would.
In regards to living there, you may as well pick a suburb, any suburb, because in typical Sydney fashion they will level the entire area (trees & all) leaving no hint of the many undulations that gave OP it's true character.
From looking at that pic of PB Drive, they already have.......

But presumably not as big a hit as an actual racing circuit...

Is it just me or is Wanneroo the only track now with decent elevation changes - apart from Bathurst of course. Amaroo Park was awesome for that. PI has some elevation change but not all that much.

PI from Lukey to Siberia is a fair drop, just very gradual so not as noticed i believe...

apart from that not much, maybe due to the predominance of street circuits and their natural location being on a fairly flat area.

maybe we need a street circuit in San Francisco

Obviously street circuits are one thing, but Winton, Sandown, QR, EC, Darwin, even Symmons are very flat.

I guess some of the "great" circuits are also flat: Monza, old Hockenheim, La Sarthe... But the truly GREAT circuits have lots of elevation changes that challenge the driver: Nurburgring, Bathurst, Spa. IMO only and apologies for OT post.

Winton has some height in it between Turns 2 & 3 at the old Start/Finish line.

Calder had the Mt Jane "Bump" added to it in the mid 90's but both are generally flat.

"Rothmans Rise" at Sandown is a pretty big climb up the back straight leading to the down hill wiggle down to Dandy Rd corner.

I reckon Wanneroo, Sandown & PI are similar in high to low height differences, it's just that Wanneroo goes up & down over a shorter distance.

I think that most of the rises are not as odvious on TV as they are in person. T2 at PI is a good indication.

Yeah, Bathurst is a classic example.

TV just doesn't do the place justice when it comes to how steep the climb is and the run down the Dipper & Esses is back down again.

and lets not forget the massive mountains otherwise known as "the bumps" going into turn 3 at QR. Will there be a farewell thread for them once the track is resurfaced?

I have driven Calder, Winton, PI, Sandown at racing speed and none of them have any real ups and downs compared to the tracks of old ;(
