Slowcoach should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
last night on ITV - I normally watch it to satisfy my morbid destructive streak watching ridiculous and very dangerous manoeuvres from appalling drivers around the world but last night it was all about safety , don't yawn , most of the programme was dedicated to how F1 technology over the years has been introduced to road cars. Infact they laballed F1 drivers as 'Crash Testers' for ordinary motorists , anyway there was some great old footage from bygone eras , when men were men ! For example Stirling Moss was a guest and he explained he never ever wore a seatbelt in all his professional racing career ! Not a good example-setter you might think until he explained that right behind his head was a 47 gallon fuel tank , he and the rest of the drivers preferring to be thrown clear of a car which could explode right behind their ears ! Not to mention the total lack of crumple zones meaning that the racers body took the full force of whatever they hit. Forget all your traction control and other gimmickery this is where we got wing mirrors from !!
I believe it is the first of a two-parter but I have no idea how much race footage will be in next weeks show.....

I have to say I can see the point of being thrown out. When you're sitting "ON" a car like the historic F1's, and there is no roll-hoop above your head, then the very last thing you need is your spine and neck propping up the weight of an overturned car.

Which is not to say that being ejected isn't going to hurt. Having seen a Cooper Bristol driver get spewed bodily out of a somersaulting wreck at Coys, I think the only way of staying safe in a historic race car is not to have the accident in the first place....
