Motor Racing in the 70's
I took this photo at Oulton Park in September 1979. I think this is Warren Booth in the Shadow nearest.

Are you sure that's Oulton Park?

Looks like it to me, the old pedestrian bridge would be to the right of the photographer.

It looks similar but I don't remember race control looking like that and the Paddock looks very empty.
I found this from about 1975 |

Surely the photographer would know where he was when he took it though chaps?
The far distance does look like the wooded bit at the end of Clay Hill into and around Druids? The only other places that bit looks like is either Croft or maybe Aintree? |

That's definately Croft. Not sure if it was 1979.

I suspect it is late 1978 or 1979 and that the bright yellow Shadow is Phil Bennett's DN3. The red Chevron may be George McMillan's B35.

Or Bernard Hunter, Allen, he had B35-10 in '78. Not sure about the Argo behind though, I wonder if it could be the FSV JM4 of Bruce Venn (??). If so, it would make it '79, and you were right, the B35 would be McMillan. Assuming its Croft, it maybe a combined Libre/FSV race as a guess. Intriguing pic indeed!

Croft - I'm not going mad after all
I agree with Bruce Venn's Super Vee Argo. http://i980.photobucket.com/albums/a...untitled10.jpg (Picture taken from the Olly Hollamby thread) |

I didn't think it could have been Warren Booth, as the driver shown could see over the steering wheel!
(Apologies to Warren, but it was a standing joke with my mates when we were spectating when he raced, that it was either Warren Booth, Jimmy Clitheroe, or a 12 year old boy driving the car as he was somewhat vertically challenged!) |

I thought it was Oulton where the bridge used to be. More likely it could be Aintree than Croft. I used to watch after the Esses at Croft or later on the Chicane.
I've pics from Oulton on the rest of the film. Andy. |

So far I've only been to Croft once - back in 1974 iirc - but I have to say it looked vaguely familiar and not like anywhere else I can recall.
The map here seems to fit as well. The description that accompanies the page certainly sounds familiar. For a number of reasons, some mentioned there, it was a visit not easily forgotten. |

I stand corrected, I felt that it couldn't have been Croft.

I've still got the photo on computer. Just to the right of the Eagle Star banner, there's a red brick building, that wouldn't be the water tower at the top of Clay Hill, Oulton?
Was there any thing like that at Croft? |

The structure in the photo looks just like it is based on an Airfield Control Tower is in just the right place related to the circuit map found at the link posted earlier.
Furthermore if one looks at Google maps of the current circuit there is a building, possibly a farm or a former farm, together with a copse of trees in what seems to be about the right position for the red brick building that Andy mentioned a coupld of posts ago. In fact there are a couple of possibilities for that if one makes allowance for possible changes over the last 30 years. Is the film continuous and contiguous strips or might it be a mix of more than one film? Some of mine, those that I can find after my wife's tidying up activity, seem to have become a little mixed up over the years despite appearing to have been stored in their orginal protective storage. It can be very confusing at times. Last edited by grantp; 23 Jun 2011 at 21:32. |
