Sir Thank you for that. But they are mistakes. The car I'am driving is in fact ex Pete Clarke, same F3M1 just with updated bodywork. The first F3 Modus built #001. I only did a few laps, the clutch broke. In practice the airbox venturi flew off so we made a new one out of a Coke tin and taped it to the airbox. After that one and only event I ended up swapping it along with the 'Transporter' (BR parcel wagon) for a couple of road cars. A 1970 Ford Escort estate and a '72 Cortina!! Thanks Alan and Eric, I was trying to remember where I recognised the name from.
It would make sense re film. I've pics from Libre race, and then a pic from Lodge, Oulton. I always used to watch at Lodge. I can't remember, but was they're trees etc between Croft start and Barcroft and Sunny? Andy |

Hmm - not at all sure what that is. It looks as though it could be an early 1600 F3.

It certainly has some Merlyn characteristics, but I think the body is wrong. The Jomo had inboard front suspension so we can rule that out.
Dan Rear - where are you? |

Here Alan, and I can't place it either! May be 1 for Messrs Rainford/Arron. They used to frequent Longridge occasionally in the 70s. Would the pic be '76 or '77 perhaps, I think that was when Warren had his Lotus. OTOH I can't think of any single seaters up there that it could be. It looks a bit like a Merlyn Mk21 F3 car. Didn't the James Hunt (the Preston one)/Paul Gardner combo have a March 718 at that time, could it be that?

Not many of my Longgridge programmes survive, but I have checked what I have.
At two meetings in early 1976, T Dootson was entered for Longridge Libre races in a Piper F3 car, with 1.6 engine. It is listed as blue in one programme, but yellow in another. He qualified fifth on April 25, eighth on May 23. None of the Libre cars bore the number 47, however. f3history.co.uk lists the Piper and has two snaps of a prototype chassis, although it adds that there is no record of any F3 cars being made. If it is the Piper, I guess it could be the original chassis with some later, bitsa bodywork added in a Preston lock-up. The only other oddball I found was John R Poole's 3.0 JR Special, also in blue, from the May event. Warren Booth's Lotus 69 was on pole at both meetings, but I didn't log the result of the first. John Walker won the second in his March 742. I shall later delve into a box to see whether I can find smudgy photos of either car, to prove or disprove any connection with the above. First, though, toast, Marmite and Goodwood beckon. |

I lost programmes when I moved down to Oxford in 1983. Looks like a F5000 at Weighbridge Corner at Longridge.1976 I think.

Hard to tell but looks like a McLaren M10B. Maybe Don Robinson's ex-Bill Wood car which was that shade of yellow but I didn't know that he circuit-raced it.

Blue Car & Yellow Mclaren M10
Andy,
Sorry for the delay...been away on the continent, Classic racing on 2 wheels, its a lot cheaper than 4 & far less hassle! Firstly the Blue Car is a " Bitza " early70s F3 car out of Paul Gardners outfit. The letters on the front are L.D.M.C. (Longton & District Motor Club)Probobly sold by him to someone in the Preston Area. I suspect it also competed in their annual Sprint Championship. The Yellow Mclaren is definately Don Robinsons,i know he only did the odd race with it,but he competed in many sprints at Longridge since it first opened in the early 70s always in open wheelers. One more driver who first started at Longridge was Kim & i,m sure he also had a brother, who first appeared there in identical Lotus "Wedge" Formula Fords in L.A.C. or L.D.M.C. run sprints again in the early 70s. |

On the mystery blue car, Ossy's reminded me, didn't James Hunt, a mate of Paul Gardner I think, have a Mclaren M4 at one point?

What your'e doing seems a lot more interesting than working Ossy. Thanks for all the info. I was going and watching Motor racing 'til about 2000 and "James Hunt" was still racing then. Would that be the same Gentleman?

"James Hunt"
Andy,
The James or "Jim" Hunt in question lived on Blackpool Rd in Preston,& YES Dan he had a M4 Mclaren fitted with a twin cam also via Mr Gardner amongst other single seaters. He was in his 50s in 76. So anythings possible. One of my friends races a front engined Formula Junior regularly & he is touching 75. P.S. The "Kim" i mentioned in my previous post was Mather! Thats for Dan. |

I took a few photographs of Formula Juniors 2001-2003 around home.(ie Silverstone, Mallory Park and Donington). Were those Lotus 61's that Kim and his brother were driving?

No 61 is a Lotus 61 (I'm sure you know). Took photo at Brands Hatch 2001.
