He is saying that GTE lap times now are comparable to GT1 lap times of 5 years ago. If GT1 still existed, it would be considerably faster.

Salamus nailed it, and going by how GTEs have gotten faster I'd expect the GT1s to be alot faster now if they hung around in unRateled guise.

Everything would have gotten faster. That's why they always cut the cars back because they know they're getting faster each year. Oh well, maybe one day they'll just let them be, but probably not since there is 'safety concerns'.

History shows us that usually when regulators slash the performance the engineers in 2 or 3 years are able to move back to the previous performance. One good sample is the Group B rally ban, in 2 or 3 years the Group A rally cars were faster.
