This has nothing to do with the Perrinn specifically but F1 engines in LMP1 is an idea that has been kicking around for a little while now by several motorsports journalist. Yet many of the "experts" on here continue to dismiss the idea. I don't think you'll see one in a Perrinn unless it's factory backed and supported. The engines would be far too expensive and complex for privateers.

The 2014 F1 power units are fully legal in LMP1, this was a deliberate move by the ACO/FIA. However does that mean anyone will use one? Probably not as they are very expensive.

Wasn't the mooted cost of a F1 engine deal at about 15-17 million Euro per season? That would be completely prohibitive to anyone but a factory team to actually run a F1 engine.

IMO it will be a F1 derivated engine not a f1 engine, with much cheaper components. The materials could be much cheaper, for example, the resistance engines doesn't need ultraexpensive pneumathic valves or something like a ultracompact f1 gearbox.
It will be expensive but not that expensive. |

Interesting point.
The whole idea behind Baretzky's universal motor was a block and internals which could be shared across platforms, not necessarily identical motors. An F1 block, rods, crank, and oil pan with a different front cover to allow camshaft drive, different heads to hold mechanical valve gear, maybe pistons with a little more clearance, and a different transmission with takeoffs for an alternator and A/C would be a lot cheaper than a completely new motor because most of the heavy engineering would have been done to produce the F1 motor. Timing and valve gear for a DOHC head shouldn’t be too hard to design. The intake and exhaust might get design-intensive, but at least there would be a baseline design and whatever test results from the development of the F1 motor. Honda builds and leases endurance-racing motors. Maybe their 2015 offering will be based on their F1 engine. Maybe they have though ahead and are doing the design work simultaneously. |

I´m still thinking about Cosworth... They have a current F1 engine that will become grand fathered next year and they said the past summer that they was working on a 2014 engine, but it seems that they won´t have any client next year (Marussia ran away).
It would be good to have them back into resistance. |

I think this bit suggests that 2015 is their goal at the moment

Maybe all they want to do is have a car ready to roll at Le Mans to show that they are serious.
As I read it they don't really have the money to run the thing all season, though I would be surprised if they didn't get accepted at Le Mans if they showed up before the test days with a real car, motor, and drivers. After all, there might not be a lot of privateer P1s on the grid, other than Rebellion. |

I would recommend reading this article (in French) from endurance-info.com.
One learns that (only) three individuals (including Nicolas Perrin himself) are currently working on the project. It's a bit short (to say the least) for a project that targets a "constructor" programme. Perrinn Ltd obviously need to find a real constructor that would be ready to be involved and make this project fly. |

Partly I imagine due to Skipton not exactly being the centre of the universe? It's a lovely part of England, and Skipton has a very pretty castle, but not where I think of immediately when I think of hi-tech prototype sportscars... |

To be more precise, here is what Nicolas Perrin is reported to say:

I think its a must for them to showcase their car ..... look at what happened to Bailey , wasted all that money on design , production and all for nothing .
They must showcase their effort if they want to sell the thing . |

Very nice looking, hopefully they run it at Le Mans as they previously stated.

If they can have something that looks like it might be a runner to display at Le Mans and then cobble together someone who's able to run it later in the year then we can start to say this is a credible project.
It's the downside to there not being a post-LM place in Europe to run an LMP1 - so should focus be on getting a Far Eastern investor to get it running in Fuji / Shanghai / Bahrain or maybe seeing if it could be sorted in LMP2 spec to run in a later ELMS round? |

I thought they were "hoping" to run it? IE. looking for funding. I am pretty sure all privateer LMP1 entries would be accepted at this point.

All the info is here.
http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/111478 No one came in for 2014 so they opted to update the car so they can showcase it to customers at Le Mans next year. Not race it. |
