Formula Ford Kent 1600 Compression
What are good compression figures for a Top Kent engine I'm getting around 175 to 180 psi across my 4 cylinders which I'm being told is very good, can you get more in a top hp engine. Dose the more compression give you more mid range torque and less top end?

I have not been involved with FF for a long time, but those figures look very good. The combustion volumes were tightly regulated, so you would be limited to the compression possible with those specs.
Make very sure that you do everything by the rule book. Are you running the specified camshaft? This will also affect the compression you are seeing. High compression does help the power generally, but an engine is a balance of compromises to get the best possible results over the full rev range, with a given fuel. If your power drops off at high rpms due to over compressing your cam is probably working there and you are losing out where you should be making the real power. Remember you are measuring compression at cranking speed and not where the engine is actually working. Tip: Go and sort out the rest of the car and gain experience before you even think about more power! Engine tuning is a large black hole that you can pour all your money down with a very low return. |

No Worries I've owned quite a few Formula Fords over the years and had engines that had only 120-130 compression and won races in cars that had around 165 to 175psi and also engine with 180psi that had 107hp had great mid range torque that didn't drop off , all engines were fully legal and tested, was just curious what other competitors have or have had with different engines.

Unless you are using the same pressure gauge with the same throttle opening then readings don't tell the whole story.
What is more important is that they are all the "Samish" otherwise there will obviously be an imbalance that will affect torque, and that is more important in a limited HP car. As FF are limited with what you can do regarding tuning, cam timing is one thing that most people play about with to get a compromise and as pointed out will affect compression. |
