Engineering question
The new floor that Renault have brought to Silverstone seems to have helped them make a step forward, but only Hülkenberg's car is fitted with it. When they'd finished the design, why didn't they just... make two? Genuine question, which may have a simple answer.

The manufacturing is the time consuming part of new bits rather than the design. This is can be the difference with the big and small teams. (Gary Anderson mentioned in a question here that top teams put a lot of effort in reducing manufacturing times http://www.autosport.com/premium/fea...-than-mercedes )
Big carbon fibre parts can take days to build-up and possibly can only be 'cooked' one at a time. It's not just Renault this year that has had these problems: http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/129434 Last edited by Adam43; 15 Jul 2017 at 16:39. |

To enlarge on the point;you can't start making the second part until the first one is out of the mould. With the short component life before an upgrade comes along it isn't worth making a second mould to allow simultaneous production of two components.

For the size of a floor, their biggest autoclave may only be able to do one at a time?
Or given the cost of making these parts, wouldn't you want to verify it before investing time and money in a second one that may not provide the advantage hoped for ? |
