I can't see Formula 1 ever dropping China from the calendar. They probably think they can't afford not to have a race in China due to the exposure.

But so far yesterday and today the stands look very empty.

F1Guy is heading for a stewards' enquiry!
Ricciardo's bad luck continues! Two engine issues in two rounds.

Renault gave all teams an update this round for more power. Excluding Tag Heuer it seems.

Maybe the French company is trying to point RBR towards the door that leads to a Japanese company??

Seems like Red Bull are furious with Renault. Apparently the spare engine unit not fully built.

Looks like Ricciardo won't make qualifying at all.

Touch and go whether Daniel makes the session. Kimi says it is starting to rain.

Looking at the track schedule seems there was only 1 support race. So not much on track action for the paying fans

The McLaren is hot garbage. It's so disappointing. My apologies to those I criticized for their reservations preseason.

You can see the crowd through the smog this year, so there is one improvement.

Ohhhhh. They are still solidly P3 in WCC though. But long way to go. Their chassis seems relatively mediocre, lightyears from Red Bull and worse than Renault also for the moment.

Fun qualifying session overall. Good job by Vettel, Raikkonen disappointed of course, but he never expresses too much.

Going by the traffic outside the circuit, they should have a push bike race as a support. They are more popular than cars that's for sure. I say open up the circuit to about 200-300 members of the public for a 5 lap race! That will fill in the time and be entertaining for sure!

I wonder whether RBR problems are due to the fact they wont use the Renault recommended lubricants and fuels because of a commercial arrangement.

Renault and McLaren both use BP/Castrol, but Red Bull have signed up with ExxonMobil instead.

They're the only customer team in 2018 to differ from their engine provider's works team.

Toto Wolff made a comment on this factor:
Quote:
"Strategically you need to make sure that you are on the same performance levels," he explained. "And therefore have the same fluids as the works team."

Mercedes is quite insistent about Williams and Force India also using Petronas in their cars.

Similarly, Ferrari stipulates that Haas and Sauber should use Shell.

I didn't follow practice or realize qualifying happened already. How did Ferrari get pole here? This has traditionally been Mercedes romp.

Is it tyre strategy? Who has long run pace from practice?

This track is fairly easy to pass on with the massive straight. So it's not a done deal for Ferrari if Merc turns the power up.
