Max Power Magazine
You know what I'm talking about. Those spotty oiks in suped-up Novas, Saxos and Astras that you see driving around 4 inch exhaust, bass bins the size of woks, plastic aero-bumpers and low profile tyres. Geezers. Or idiots??

If there were any justice in the world the phrase 'Max Power Magazine' would be corrected by the auto-censor.

I really can't stand those people! It's a bloody Nova!!! It handled like to start with. Adding plastic and more noise won't sort that out! My main peve is that they think they're the dogs but really can't handle what they've got. They're all very good at welding their foot to the floor but when it comes to a corner... Oh NO!!!
These cars are owned and built by little boys that can't afford/handle a real car. |

i used to be into Max Power, I also have a modified XR2i with 3.5 inch noisy exhaust
so I dont have a problem with Max Power and modified cars (although some are silly). im into race cars now, but my interest began from modified cars. |

Though i may be considered one,as i own a saxo AND have modified it slightly i do not read Max Power or any of the others out there. The only reason i went with the car was because it handles realy well as standard and with only 90bhp is 'fun'. But theres been reasoning behind it all, when you realise how restricted the engines are espercially at high revs. But i do laugh at the horrendous bodykits people want, and dont understand a boot full hifi when when its turned up you cant actually understand the music.

Mostly very sad muppets. I've followed a Citroen AX once whose driver was obviously not content with the standard small spoiler at the top of the tailgate, so he'd got another one, turned it upside down and tie-wrapped it to the original
I have also followed so many modded cars that are noisy and quick in a straight line, but I've been right up their exhaust pipe round corners. My car's not especially fast, but it DOES grip well, and I know how to drive it. What gets me is when you see someone in, for example as seen at a service station once, a Peugeot 206, spoilers, alloys, big exhaust etc etc, and then another one pulls alongside, practically identical. Both have "Styled by xxxxxpowersport" decals or something. My camper van may be possibly one of the most unfashionable models of car going, but it's done (to my mind anyway) tastefully, not excessively, and most importantly with imagination. It's all my choice, my ideas, and a lot of it is my effort. I should have "Styled by ME" graphics on the side. Best thing is, it always turns heads, and nobodyis going to park anything remotely similar looking next to it, no matter where on planet Earth I choose to park |

Oh, and I suppose I ought to add that I have nothing against a small amount of modification, tastefully done, but if you have so many wings on that you cut the air like a halfbrick, or have stuck some fibreglass and chickenwire to your bumper, or scrape the ground with the front splitter/can't turn the wheels properly because they won't fit in the arches, or need a sunstrip with make and model simply to identify what the poor thing was before you messed with it, then it's a big NO-NO!

In my opinion, if you've got a nice set of wheels, cars fairly low and the car is shiny, then thats enough.
Your car aint gonna need to take off, so why put on useless pieces of plastic. |

Is it just me, or is there a dearth of home engineering going on these days?
I mean, granted, there are a lot of ways to make a trick Nova or Civic or Escort or whatever, but these are catalogue modifications. I've got a whole pile of 1970s custom car magazines lurking somewhere, and while you may not think that taking a Ford Popular and giving it a Viva front end, a Jag IRS at the back, metalflake paint, dralon interior and a roofchop is exactly the acme of good taste, it tended to be something someone set their heart to doing in their own workshop, rather than throwing money at it. I remember some absolute gems of eccentric engineering, such as a Rover V-8 powered Fiat 500 with a flip-front. A lowriding Rover 3.5 Coupe which had been expertly converted into a 2-door. A Mk3 Cortina with 6 inches let into the engine bay to make room for the big-block Chevy. Now, that is what I call impressive, not an off-the-peg body kit and a sound system which contravenes the Geneva convention. Or maybe it's just me, and even boy-racers ain't what they used to be. Now, where's that edition of Hot Car which did a step-by-step guide to dropping a Ford V6 into a Hillman Avenger.... |

What amuses me is that they spend thousands of pounds on a nasty little hatchback & end up with a silly-looking nasty little hatchback which probably performs & handles worse than a standard car! .....and big alloy wheels revealing tiny little brake discs are a dead giveaway! It's their money, though, so let 'em do what they want - we all need a good laugh now & again! |

Tim, Im pretty sure that sort of modifying still goes on and has its own magazines (custom stuff). Modifying cars has taken off in a major way, its like a fashion accessory now and most people dont have the time/skills to do everything manually.
There are also catalogues and garages to pick your parts. With a few bits from here and a few bits from there you can create your own design. Max Power is all about having the loudest, fastest, most extreme car you could think of. It doesnt matter if you dont like it, coz thousands of people do |

The custom scene is alive and well- they're mixing in with the kit-car folk a bit more these days since it's sort of frowned upon to chop an origonal Ford Pop so they start with a body and chassis kit instead.
As for Max Extension, it's sometimes a quite amusing read (someone elses copy of course) and most of the featured cars have had a lot of work put into making it good enough to show, you really can't knock someone for that. Having said that ( ) how many of the average young modders realise that without modding the engine to suit, that big exhaust is loosing them power and how many just hook up a big 'sub bass' (I prefer to hear real bass....) without thinking about uprating the alternator or using a second battery? Those are the ones that really make me laugh. Oh, and when you're out cruising in your modded motor, for goodness sake SMILE!!! Last edited by Bluebottle; 12 Feb 2003 at 20:44. |

i wouldn't go tarting up my car on the exterior unless it was going to make it handle better at top speed or round corners.
the stereo is fair game, i'd definitely sort out a decent stereo since music and cars are #2 and #1 loves respectively. 'bottle - i believe your evidence may just be highlighting the fact that the lads who mod because they've got nothing better to do are quite possibly the thickest people on the planet... back to max power - i think it's great. i'd buy it every month if i didn't prefer reading fhm as my monthly bloke magazine. |

I always think "Max Power" is THE most ironic title for a magazine as it's about everything but. All show. No go. Losers, I'm afraid.

I think it's really rather ridiculous the way 20-something wannabe gangstas try to impress the ladeez with their styled-by-Airfix mods...besides, I'd rather have myself an Aston and get the sounds for real
