Mick Doohan is.....
5 time world champ we know.
But is he truly the greatest or just a grey haired racer that was lucky enough to ride in a period devoid of any decent competition between Schwanz/Rainey to Rossi period? Just like Gomick is filling the bowling void at Warrandyte between the Bones to Ross Brown period. Last edited by Ralf; 13 Jun 2003 at 03:30. |

In 1992, until his accident at Assen, Mick completely destroyed the entire field (Rainey, Schwantz, Kocinski, Lawson, Mamola, Chandler, Gardner et al).
Without injury he could conceivably have won every championship between 1991 and 1999. Yes, he had the best bike but he developed it and he was also the only one who could really tame it. Not sure Rossi has had the stiffest competition (either riders or bikes) and we’ve yet to see what he can do when he is injured or really put under pressure. |

Not the greatest. After 1993, with Rainey and Schwantz out due to injury, he had little competition. Yamaha and Suzuki did not have replacements of the calibre of Schwantz and Rainey.

this is like comparing skaife & brock to the likes of dick johnson & moffat, your talking about the person with the best equipment & the ability to punt it around, in their time they were the best combination, but when you consider mick & the fact that the rest of the honda riders used to copy his settings & still couldnt beat him it sais something about his ability. weather he is better than agostini its hard to tell, but in his time in the world scene & against other factory teams yes he was the greatest/best at the time & baring injury could of had 8 titles in a row. its like was criville the best rider when he won the championship & was roberts jr the best when he did the same, these riders were nowhere near the caliber of doohan yet they stillhave world titles to their credit.
weather you like him or not doohan was miles better than anyone around at his time & i think he could still cut it with the current crop of riders |

He was brilliant. Yeah, best bike or not (same argument for Rossi), he still beat the competition, including the other honda riders. And you don't get given the best bike (or car) without Talent. The same argument has been made about Foggy on the Ducati, but Foggy showed he could win races on the Honda as well.
You can't complain that a driver or rider wants to stay with the best ride and dominate. It's nice to see people like Schumacher take on the challenge of bringing Ferrari back to the top, or Corser developing bikes at Aprillia and Foggy-Petronas, but why should they unless they want the challenge? Having the best ride and lack of competition doesn't mean you'll dominate - look at Muller in the BTCC at Vauxhall. The car dominated, he was for 2 years running the number one driver in the number one team and he still didn't get the title. Greatest ever? Who knows - it's impossible to compare riders or drivers against others of different eras. Mick was good though - very, very good, by anyone's standards. |

He wasn't as good as Rainey or Schwantz when both of those dropped out, but defiantely improved by 1999. I think he was lucky to be the dominant rider in a fairly weak era, guys like Barros and Criville aren't really megastars, and Biaggi hasn't followed through on his promise. Rossi would've destroyed him, he's got a much better claimt o being the greatest than Mick.

Doohan is King of the 1990s.
Anyone who says Doohan was only champion because of superior equipment should look at the situation Rossi was also in. Then you could also say Agostini had exactly the same situation, the ONLY difference being the level of competition. But, as they say, the best riders always end up on the best bikes because they are talented enough to make the most of a good situation. |
