However, IMO, the Mugen powered Panoz I saw at RA a few years ago was the worst sounding car I ever heard...
I thought that too when I heard it at LeMans ..... but it did grow on me and sounded differant to the test day and the race . The Mugen in the Kondo Dome sounds ok to me . Is it the same engine ?

According to the annual LM books, the capacity of the Mercedes V8 was 6000 cc in 1998 and 5721 cc in 1999. I prefered the Mercedes sound of 1999.

The V12 Jaguar had :
5993 cc in 1986
6900 cc in 1987
7000 cc in 1988, 89 and 90
7400 cc in 1991

Interesting to be reminded that the Jag had swollen to 7.4L in '91. That was the year that Mazda won, and I remember Tom Walkinshaw saying after practice that they could either run at the front and run out of fuel before the end, or make the fuel last and not be competitive. They finished 2, 3 and 4 as if to prove the point. Maybe the 7.0 could have made all the difference, although I think by then Tom had just about had enough of the ACO.
And remember the XJR-14, didn't they bring two but not even bother racing them?
Fantastic livery on both cars.

Yes, everyone was very disppointed when they knew that the XJR14 were not on the grid.
The 7400cc was chosen because of the higher weight (1000 kgs approx.). The Mazda with their Wankel engines, had a advantage with a weight of only 850 kgs.

That's another thing I don't like about DPs. They're all V8s. Sure you have a few Porsche sixes(how long will they persist?), and maybe that Acura DP will show up, but otherwise it's all V8. No V12 scream, no turbo hiss, and no Rotary SCREAM.

IMSA should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
Without a doubt, the very worst sounding unmuffled engine is the Mazda RX7. Just plain nasty. In 1996 or 1977 Mazda sent a factory RX7 2 car team to compete in IMSA (I think, may have been TRANS AM). Everyone had their fingers in their ears the entire race when the RX7's came by. Probably one of the major reasons noise restrictions were implemented at Portland International Raceway.

Nope, partly right.

Vinnie talks about the Lister LMP, the Lister Storm (FIA GT) has a V12. The Lister LMP sound great, I've heard it at Le Mans and LM 1000kms. It's got a Saleen-like sound, but it's louder.
