1982 BMW 528i Group A in ETCC and other championships
I am looking for period photographs as well as general and technical information on the Eggenberger BMW 528i Gr.A racing cars that raced in the 1982 European Touring Car Championship and other national championships.
I am also particularly interested in finding period photographs and race results of the car of Marcello Cipriani. The car was red and took part in the Brno ETCC race on 13/06/82. I suspect the car also raced in national Italian races in 1982 (and possibly 1983 ?), probably in not more than 5 races in total. The car also appeared in races in Italy in 1986 and 1987 driven by Mario Fortina / Paolo Toia : Monza 20/09/86 Mugello 03/10/86 Varano 10/05/87 Misano 11/07/87 Coppa Carpi 27/09/87 Vallelunga 15/10/87 Monza 500 km 1987 Thank you for any leads. Sadly (Possibly not the right word) Frank de Jong and his ETCC site is the best source for this type of info. If he don't have it, its probably not out there.

If i'd got into racing a bit earlier i might have been able to help, but i can only remember reading about and seeing 635's race rather than 528's. Sorry.
Out of interest Marcello Cipriani drove a lower class car, quite close to my heart, run by either Jolly Club or Luigi in 84/'85 ETC i think? I only know that the Eggeneberger/Enny sponsored BMW Italia 528i cars were raced by Grano/Kelleners and Muller/Brancatelli i think? But Peter's suggestion is best i would say. |

Marcello drove Alfa Romeo's (GTV6 and 75) for Jolly Club and Albatech, and BMW 635's for CiBiEmme from 84 to 87 in the ETCC.
Probably all 1982 528's were Eggenbergers (with Alpina engines) since Eggenberger was BMW Motorsport's partner back then. Can't add anything to Cipriani's car - tracing chassis numbers for touring cars is far more difficult than the average single seater (and I know how difficult THAT can be). |

I have a picture of a red Bastos Heyer/jooson 528 that raced at the silverstone TT in 82 if it would help.

Werginz drove a group 2 530, the previous model, from 1978 to 1979/80 before switching to a group 2 635.

Wasnt it also a 528 that was used by Patrick Snyers in Bastos colours in the 82 Belgian Open rally championship? The same car was used by the DeMaegd brothers in the early rounds of the 83 chanpionship.

Not all the cars were completely built by Eggenberger. Some were partially built and Eggenberger alo supplied components it seems. I am told Eggenberger Motorsport did build its owns engines but some other preparators made their own engines as well. I am not aware of Alpina having built engines for these cars. Where is this information coming from ? On your website, you indicate that Eggenberger sold about 20 kits for these cars. I suspect this figure includes the complete cars as well. Where is this information coming from ? There is some confusion regarding the number of cars built. Ruedi Eggenberger told me recently from memory that he built 50 cars but this sounds way too high. Any idea ? |

I have 10 or so more from 82 and about the same from 1980 yet to be added. There is only 2 ETCC cars on at the moment, check back in a couple of weeks for the rest Hope this helps. Last edited by Nordic; 15 Apr 2004 at 14:54. |

A Simca Rally 3 indeed, german-entered.
About the 528i; I mixed up a few things this morning I guess. According to Jeremy Walton, BMW Motorsport developed the car and the cars were built by "outside specialists". Eggenberger were appointed as engine and hardware/complete car suppliers while Hartge was a recommended engine supplier to. Alpina did the 6-series in 1983. I must have more info on Eggenbergers involvement somewhere but that needs a lot of digging. |
