Round 8: Silverstone British GP Meeting: 16 July 1983
Not sure of the full entry for the GP support. I've included everyone listed in the partial result I have, plus all of the cars mentioned or pictured in Performance Car's report, which covered both the GP support and the previous Donington round, so is a bit sketchy on both. Dave Brodie might have been a DNF- the PC report incldes a pic of the Starion going off into the catchfencing, but doesn't say if this was in practice or the race, or whether it was a race-ending incident Geoff Kimber-Smith is also pictured in the article- I'm guessing he was a DNS, as the pic shows the Nashua-sponsored Corolla with heavy damage on the right front corner after hitting the wall. A few points from the report: Allam was troubled by a down-on-power engine 'I was having to hold 3rd where I'd normally use 4th, even though the car was handling beautifully' Patrick Watts now had a Metro Turbo- both Metros were suffering from misfires on a hot day. Alan Minshaw just failed in a last lap bid to take the class lead from Richard Longman The BS Automotive/Cheylesmore 635 for Stuck was described as a one-off' due to backing from Diners Club .The Cheylesmore outfit hoped to field the car again, but admitted it was unlikely. A deal must have been put together though, as it actually did the rest of the season.... A tyre war was building up in the 1600 class, with several leading competitors switching from Dunlop to Avon since early season. Conversely, Chris Hodgetts had changed from Avons to Dunlops, and Alan Minshaw having previously switched to Avons, reverted to Dunlop for the GP support. John Morris appeared to be hedging his bets- the Donington class win having been achieved with Avons on the front of the Scirocco and Dunlops on the rear.... This being the BTCC, trouble was naturally brewing- Frank Sytner had protested the TWR Rovers at Donington over the rear inner wheelarches... Last edited by KA; 22 May 2010 at 16:52. |

Round 9: Donington. 8 August 1983
Again, I've got a partial result, plus I've listed every car mentioned or pictured in the Performance Car mag report. This was an eventful one- Stuck was back in the BS/Cheylesmore 635 (though no Diners Club sponsorship here) and would become the first driver to lead a 1983 BTCC round in anything other than a Rover... Lovett led from the start, until brake problems combined with increasing pressure from Soper and Stuck caused him to go off- the Rover got stuck fast and wouldn't re-start, handing the lead to the BMW driver. Soper however took the lead a lap later. Stuck then came under pressure from Sytner before they clashed on lap 12 at Redgate, Frank ending up out of the race with broken suspension and rear bodywork damage...Stuck briefly grabbed the lead back from Soper on lap 29, but Soper retook it before the end of the lap, maintaining his advantage to the flag Win Percy had been in touch with the leaders throughout and finished 3rd Jeff Allam retired fairly early in the race after a clash with Sytner broke the Rover's front suspension- he'd been struggling with oversteer and a weak engine anyway. Gordon Spice was pleased with a 4th place- his first finish in the Rover, and Mike Newman brought his Capri home in an impressive 5th Andy Rouse dominated Class B, helped by a bad first lap for Pond and visits to the pits for both Dooley and Watts, Andy building a huge lead over Hamish Irvine's RX7. Hamish retired on lap 24, but the Rouse Alfa began to suffer from fuel starvation, and was forced to slow down. Meanwhile, Pond was recovering from his poor start... Rouse moved over to let the leaders lap the Alfa on the last lap, not realising Pond's Metro was tucked in behind them, enabling Pond to snatch an unexpected class win Alan Minshaw won Class C after a close battle with Chris Hodgetts, the two taking turns to lead the class. Behind them, Richard Longman had a long scrap with the Morris Scirocco, until the VW dropped out with a sick engine The Datapost team had a fairly fraught weekend- Longman and Curnow having 3 engine failures in testing and practice, plus a shunt on Saturday morning for Longman, and another damaged engine. They had to cobble together two serviceable engines from the broken ones Oh, and the protest saga continued- Sytner protesting the Rovers over their valve gear, and TWR protesting the Sytner and Cheylesmore 635s in respect of bodywork and spoilers. TWR had also issued a writ against the RAC earlier in the week for mishandling the earlier protest. The paddock rumour on Sunday was that Tom had been seeking an injunction to prevent the race going ahead..... Last edited by KA; 22 May 2010 at 17:40. |

Round 11: Silverstone. 2 October 1983
Again, based on a partial result, plus every car mentioned, or identifiable from the pics in the Performance Car magazine report. I've already been through the detail of this one a few posts back |

Corolla Queries...
A couple of questions, based on what we know of the results for the two Donington rounds and a couple of pics I've got.
We've identified a few Toyota Corolla entries over the season, but none of them seem to have been regular- they all appear in a couple of rounds at most.
Secondly, I've got a couple of pics of the GK-S car. The first is in the PC report for the GP meeting- a b/w pic showing and shows a dark coloured car with a wide lighter-coloured band along the sides carrying prominent 'Nashua' sponsorship, and race #87. The pic shows the car heavily damaged after what's described as 'an unscheduled stop into the pit wall during practice' The second is one I found online ages ago (I'd post a link but can't remember where I found it...). It looks like Donington, and shows Peter Lovett's Sanyo Rover lapping a plain dark red Corolla- the only visible sponsorship is on a windscreen sunstrip but I can't make it out (it's little more than a thumbnail pic) The car carries #87 and a front number plate with 'Geoff' on it, so I'm presuming it's GK-S again. So far we don't have Kimber-Smith in the results for either of the Donington rounds, but the pic shows he was clearly at one of them- but which? The only other car visible in the pic is a 635, so either the Sytner (present at both Donington rounds) or Cheylesmore (I think only at the second) car- it's a long way in the background of the pic so can't really tell which Any offers? |

GK-S was definitely at the second Donington round (although the date was August 14th, not the 8th). Qualified a couple of spots off the back, and spun in the race. Not mentioned in the top 6 in class, but all of those were quicker than him in qualifying, so that's not to say he didn't finish.
I can't find my Autosport for the June Donington round; I desperately need to re-organise the piles in my spare room, and over the summer should be able to add in info for each year. (and get started on my Thundersaloon book!) |

Found a little more of the result for this one- this might be the complete result
Rouse, Pond and Irvine were the only finishers in Class B- Unless there's anyone from Class A that I've missed (noticed that Soper seems to absent from my notes of the result- did he miss this one, or was he a DNF?), then the remaining Class C finishers are likely to have been 11th-15th overall. Entrant for the Crudgington Corolla appears to be listed in my notes (transcribed from Autosport about 25 years ago...) as 'RZ Racing'. Does that ring any bells with anyone? Looking through some old notes, I might be able to shed a little more light on the Crudgington Corolla. According to some scribbled notes alongside a copy of the result from the last round of 1982, both Chris Hodgetts and Tony Crudgington did a few races in a Corolla that season- according to my notes, it was the same car driven by John Tait earlier that season, then sold to 'RZ Racing'- whoever they were. Presumably this is the same car Crudgington used in '83? |

Found another old copy of Performance Car in the loft, so can fill in some background on this one
Round 10: Brands Hatch. 29 August 1983
Pole for Soper, with Stuck qualifying the Cheylesmore 635 second in typically spectacular style...Lovett was 3rd and Allam 4th. Brodie had the Starion going well, only doing two laps in the first session, but they were good enough for 3rd fastest. Stuck and Allam improved in the second session, but the Starion would still start from the second row in 5th. Win Percy was a little off the pace, waiting for a new engine spec from Arden Pond was fastest in Class B, and Rob Hall's Escort fastest in C At the start Soper led from Lovett, and Brodie. Stuck having a poor start, only getting away 5th, and becoming part of what PC describe as an 'almighty squabble' for third between Brodie Allam, Percy, and Gordon Spice's Rover. This resolved itself when Brodie's tyres started to go off, and 'he lost it at the head of the train, taking Percy with him. Contact was inevitible, but the result was bizarre- despite minimal panel damage to either car (Brodie was able to continue), the Toyota suffered the indignity of having the near-side whieel and suspension torn clean away, apparently the result of the steering being on full lock (Percy trying to avoid the collision) when contact was made, catching the revolving tyre' The Supra was out, and Stuck's 635 left in a secure third, with Allam and Spice fighting over 4th. Brodie continued, but his nearside front tyre 'cried enough' after 19 laps. At the front Soper began to struggle with oversteer (Rover were having tyre problems at Brands- apparently a shortage resulted in them running tyres normally used on the rear of the Rover on the front as well), and was caught and passed by Lovett on lap 9. Steve then fell back into the clutches of Stuck, the yellow Rover and the 635 starting the last lap virtually nose to tail- Soper just hanging on, as Stuck was alongside him at the flag- the two being credited with identical race times. In Class B, the Metros led from the start, until contact with another car sidelined Pond with a broken oil cooler- Tony leaving Brands by helicopter, heading for Heathrow and a flight to South Africa for a rally commitment. Little more than a lap later, Watts too was out- a head gasket failure on the Metro handing a virtually unchallenged win to Rouse. Hamish Irvine took 2nd after a great dice with Jon Dooleys Napolina Alfa, until Jon had to pit to fix a loose plug lead Class C was a battle between Chris Hodgetts and Rob Hall- Many of the other Class C contenders, particularly Minshaw, being in subdued form and fighting various problems. Hall began to catch Hodgetts late in the race, as Chris had to ease off with a deflating left front tyre- the two Escorts crossing the line together (and both credited with the same time) only yards ahead of the Soper/Stuck dead-heat- 'the four cars crossed the line in one mad scramble'! Behind them, Curnow took 3rd and class fastest lap from an unhappy Minshaw, who claimed the pressure of leading the class in the championship might have been getting to him... Greenhalgh's yellow Golf was fifth from Longman who also had to pit to re-attach a plug lead. The Brands result gave Rouse the Class B championship win, while the overall title and Class A would go down to the wire at the last round. Curnow only had a 'mathematical' chance of toppling Minshaw from the Class C title lead. Of course, it would all work out very differently, with Rouse eventually being crowned 1983 champion about a year later.... Points after 10 rounds: 1- Soper (Rover- A) 62 2- Lovett (Rover- A) 59 3- Rouse (Alfa GTV6- B) 52 4- Minshaw (VW Golf- C) 47 |

19 laps covered by a retired Dave Brodie. Would that suggest the use of the Indy circuit? Otherwise it would have been a long race by the finishers!

Pretty sure it was the GP circuit. The Indy layout only came onto the BTCC calendar in about 1987 IIRC.

Updated from Autosport. I'm afraid I don't know the order of class C after the top 6, or where Dooley fnished overall after rejoining from the pits.

I've just started to work on the 1983 BSCC, and while it will take a month or two before it will be on the site I'm happy to inform you that I have complete results and grid positions on round 1.
Of course, I will make good use of all the work that has gone into this thread (and thanks for that)! |

Another Flickr discovery- Before the Celica Supra was homologated, Win Percy made a one-off appearance in the first round at Silverstone with his 1982 Corolla, winning the 1600cc class

1983 BSCC
An interesting read, haven't been on here for a while. As far as Win and the Celica Supra goes - the car wasn't homologated until 1 Aug 1983 so I have always wondered why it was allowed to compete before that time - perhaps there was some rule over there about being able to compete provisionally once the paperwork had been submitted?
I think the race at the Silverstone GP in July was its first, not surprised it was listed as a DNS prior to that time. There also seems to have been some 'homologation creep' in other areas; car 2 comes out at some stage in 1984 with flares when they aren't homologated until 1 Aug 1985. As far as I know Arden Conversions did do all the mechanical work on the cars: they certainly built the engines, the cam profiles were theirs and so was the injection/induction work on the cars. I don't know the workshare split between HOB and AC. John HOB Celica Supra Group A #1. |

Hughes were only the sponsor/entrant and keeper of the cars IIRC.... It's interesting that the main industrial estate in Pershore must've had a pretty big touring car preparation scene because Ted Grace, Chris Hodgetts, Arden and I think Andy Rouse and one or two others were all based there at some point or another I think. Last time I went through it, the Dynamics Honda BTCC team was there. |

Thanks Jesper- I'd looked at the full results on Frank's site, but hadn't investigated the championship table.
There's one very big puzzle in the table- and it seems to exist in every version I've seen, including the 'official' one on BTCC.net. If Soper and Lovett were disqualified from the championship, how come Jeff Allam- driving an identical car, run by the same team- wasn't? |

I have been wondering about the Allam situation too - and the manufactures standing for Rover can't be unaffected either. It is as if nobody cared when Steve Soper (but also Pete Lovett?) was finally disqualified by June 1984 and Andy Rouse crowned the '83 champion.

The Shawcross tribunal seemed to have a specific remit re: the '83 results. When they announced their decision at the end of July '84, they made 2 decisions, over-riding previous findings of scrutineers at and after races:
1. Remove a Ted Grace BMW from the results of a Silverstone meeting, due to an illegal steering mechanism. (Could this be the loss of 4 points, 21 vs 25, round 6?) 2. Remove the TWR Rovers from the results due to illegal panels and modified rockers. (The statement printed in Autosport doesn't name any drivers, just the teams. Is it possible that TWR had only nominated Soper and Lovett, or that only Soper and Lovett were protested, so Allam was outside the remit of the tribunal?) |

Not sure about Point 1, though TWR certainly protested both the Ted Grace/Frank Sytner and Cheylesmore 635s at least once during the season- Just had a look at the result as listed by Frank de Jong, and it seems to be the GP meeting where Sytner had issues with the scrutineers- the first four finishers (the 3 TWR Rovers and Sytner's 635) are all listed as DQ'd for technical infringements. http://homepage.mac.com/frank_de_jon...tone%20GP.html Point two sounds like the outcome of the protests Sytner instigated against TWR at the two Donington rounds, in June... (rear inner wheelarches- is this the infamous 'African-market-spec' modification that led to the team being dubbed 'Third World Racing' by some wit at the time?) ...and again in August (valve gear- IIRC this was the modified rockers issue). TWR counter-protested both 635s on this occasion over alleged bodywork irregularities. Before the second Donington meeting Walkinshaw had taken out a writ against the MSA alleging mishandling of the previous protest- according to PC magazine, the rumour in the paddock at Donington was that he'd tried to get an injunction to prevent the race happening at all! I'm guessing that the Donington affair may have been the beginning of the process that led to Shawcross? I don't remember whether it was 1983 or 84 (I think the latter) but as I recall there's a lovely quote in one of the Performance Car articles from IIRC, Jon Dooley who apparently said something like 'Their legal budget is bigger than our racing budget for the whole season'. I wondered very briefly if the removal from the championship table of Soper and Lovett had been based on solely on the evidence gathered after Sytner's protests at the two Donington rounds- Jeff Allam's car was a DNF at both of these, so somehow was never actually inspected by the scrutineers over the protested issues at these two meetings? That doesn't stack up though, as Soper and Lovett scored one retirement each from these two rounds as well, only one TWR car seeing the chequered flag at both Donington races. The Rovers were also apparently protested at the Silverstone GP meeting (between the two Donington races), where all three finished- though I'm not sure on what grounds. Still, there's enough there to shoot my 'Allam's car somehow never being inspected over the protests' theory down pretty comprehensively! |
