2001 Bintcliffe Sport Nissan Primera
Got a bit of time to kill this week so I 've just been watching the 2001 BTCC Review and spotted a car that seemed to awaken a memory or two - does anyone have a picture of the production class Nissan Primera driven by Matt Kelly in a couple of rounds that year? I seem to recall there was controversy regarding it's rear wing or somesuch but I can't remember why.

In Production class all aerodynamic parts must be exactly as in road version of homologated car, like Alfa 156's rear spoiler. I don't know this story, but maybe this was the reason.

Going from memory here so the details are a bit sketchy.
Seem to recall he did the opening rounds at Brands (and maybe Thruxton), the car was ok but not especially great. He then disappeared for a while and returned at Silverstone sporting a new rear wing. Nothing too over-the-top, smaller than the 156 rear wing. As I recall the wing had been newly homologated in Japan but wasn't (yet) available on a UK-spec road car. After Silverstone he disappeared from the series completely, which I think was mainly down to lack of funding. |

Whatever happened to John Bintcliffe? I know the race team he owned folded a few years ago and haven't seen him since.

He started a furniture business, but plans to make a comeback in GTs with a Ginetta G50 this year.

One of the Nissan's was "stolen!?!" from memory at the end of the season when the team was run by a Mr Nordon. The other car was then used by Jason Hughes some years later.

John Bintcliffe and Matt Kelly. Now here's a couple of decent pedallers for whom things maybe didn't work out as well as they should've done.
Probably could add Simon's Graves and Harrison to that. I know John got his big chance with Audi but the other 3 were all more than capable of supertouring drives. Be good to see John driving again this year then? |

The only reason why the name Bintcliff rings a bell to me is indeed his year in the Audi. But from my dvd with a recap of that season (95?) I mostly remember him crashing out a few times, and never challenging Biela.

He had 2 years with Audi UK I think? First year with Quattro was better than the second IIRC - 2WD car wasn't very competitive....

He didn't do too badly in 1996 and 1997, 1998 wasn't so good, though not alot worse than Muller did......he basically went when Audi did.
He was offered the Ford drive alongside Radisich in 1996 was he not? |
