Mansell and MG?

I have it from a reliable source connected with MG sports funding programme that talks have taken place for Nigel Mansell to race a full season in a 2002 MG 45 with West Surrey Racing.
Apprently Dick Bennet of West Surrey racing is very keen to have him in the car and MG are keen as it will promote there new sports range with good media publicity.
Money apperently is not the issue and my contact suggests that if the car is a "front runner" then talks with Nigel Mansell will go to the next stage to place him along side Anthony Reid for 2002.

Don't worry, Reidy boy will kick his ass all the time! How many races did Mansell actually finish in 1998? 1, 2?

Got to agree with you RIKB if he does return he will bring good media attention to the sport, the decision will be based on how the MG performs this season. Running a third car is still a consideration and again will depend on Mansell coming into the team.
If he comes back for a full season we can judge him better in a touring car over a season rather than "guest apperances".
Will keep you posted if I hear any more.

Reid, Hughes, Mansell.

Three Brits (one an ex-F1 World Champion) in a British car trying to win with no help except any that is British!

Wonderful!

I guess it depends on what you want the BTCC to be. A backwater series supported by true enthusiasts like us or a top line well publicised and funded series that draws top line drivers and teams. Along with Mr Family man wife and two kids...

Quite true RIKB. I suppose you've got to stand back and look at it that way for the success of the championship.

Your spot on with your comments RIKB, whatever peoples opinions are of Mansell whatever he gives on track will be matched by the huge media attention and extra gate ticket sales, I hope he returns as he will greatly influence publicity, media and television to stay with the touring car series as at the moment it appears to be in a vunerable postion.

Oh well. If we have to put up him then I s'pose it'll be for the good of the sport. Can't stand the man tho. As long as he doesn't try to get ppl disqualified like he did with a certain Tiff Needel...

I don't think Mansell will ever come back to racing as he has his golf course now.

He returned in 98 when he had a Golf course so this is not the factor.
Money and a good car are, whilst the odds of a return are small he apparently was in conversation with an MG representitve at Rockingham speedway where he took the lap record in an Indy car.

I'm not sure which way I vote if this was ever a poll.

In one way he would be a great addition - crowds would flock back, tv would show us live or at least in prime viewing time and that would be good.
Against - oh god the whinging, the wineing, the 'he hit me' & 'he shouldn't be allowed on the track' (think of the conversations between Tom Boardman & Nige)- could I stand it?
