is this the such criticised Head And Neck System?

it's used as a head restrain in case of a crash so that the driver does not get his head ripped off from the stresses of the crash.
It will be introduced next year for formula 1 next year by the FIA |

it definatley does look very uncomfortable...cos the head is tilted forwards and the 2 carbon fibre thingy's resting on the shoulder look quite cutting off the circulation-eeee

Yes, that's the HANS device.
No, it doesn't push the head forward. It doesn't contact the helmet at all. No, it is not really uncomfortable, IF the yoke is formed correctly. The problems that F1 is having so far with it is the fact that the cockpits are extremely tight fitting around the driver, so it isn't an easy job to get it fitted correctly. But it definetely works. |

All the drivers in CART have raved about it. They've all said it's very comfortable and works a treat.

Mo Gugelmin from Pacwest in CART hit the wall at Texas during qualifying or practice at full speed, the HANS device probably saved him a very serious injury.

I welcome the HANS device. Investigations afterwards have shown that if Gonzalo Rodriguez had been wearing one when he had his fatal crash at the famous corkscrew curve at Laguna Seca in 1999, he would have survived.
