Zakkers

Really directed at the older fans! But was wathing some youtube clips today and noticed Welch using a Zakker Mk2 Turbo like Martin had.

Now I am aware that Martin had one, and also Welch. Didnt Martin sell his to Gunnar K? And does anyone know how Kjetil Bolneset got one

Also seen that terry Morstadt was driving way back then too! In the rallycross Erc results! In an Escort Turbo? He used some form of Xtrac aswell later didnt he? Think we have been here before!!

Who built these cars? How many were made if anyone knows out of curiosity.

This would have been early 80`s - I don`t think Welch`s car for some reason was always Turbo - and didn`t Colin Howard have one too?

I thought Bolnesets was Nittimaki's old car after he switched to the Peugeot in 87. I think Welch's one was more or less a direct copy of Schanche's as Martin was so dominant in his, it was clearly the way to go. Vidar Sauthon also used one but I guess that was a hand me down, probably from Bolneset. At a pure guess, there were 3 of these pukka Xtrac/Zakker Escorts.

I'm purely guessing and I'm sure will be totally embarrassed when the might RX Guru spots this thread. Over to you Guru

Please do not mix-up Mk2 with Mk3 Escorts.

Seppo Niittymäki’s Mk3 Xtrac went in the beginning of 1987 (to be replaced by the Pug) to Ragnar Forsberg and later that year to Vidar Sauthon. AFAIK it was claimed that it was later completely destroyed in a barn fire…

It was Schanche's, went to John Smith, then Barry Squibb and then a part x deal to end up with Mike Endean (Mr X-Trac), where it was returned to its former glory (Schanches scheme).

1982 GP Schanche and Welch both had Mk2 Zakspeeds 500hp with very similar livery, at least from the back anyway. I always thought Welchy had acquired Schanches but think they did have them at the same time. Welchs version ended up with a guy called Terry Southern (or something similar), didn t Schanche use the engine out of his in the original Mk3 xtrac build?

Sorry guys I was actuall orginally talkng about eh Mk2 Escorts that John and Martin had?

I know the whereabouts of teh Mk3/4 Xtracs.

For those that dont, I think Lestander had one aswell, not sure whose that was!

There were three built? Terje Schie had one? Wasn't that Seppo's? Or did terje have one made? As I remember John had one then on to Kjetil, Martins was John Smith, Squibb, Endean, and Terje was him, Kittlesen?? then Lestander?

But as I say the Mk2 rwd turbo cars are the ones I am interested in.

Just had a look through my old pictures and found these 2. The first is for sure John Welsh at Brands, and the second is possibly the blue and white car refered to ealier. Taken at an autocross many years ago , I think its Ron Hudson and could be the same car?

There is a good chance I may have owned a car which was derived from one of these shells. (I will try and post a picture and you can make your own minds up) I raced in the Northern Sports and saloon cars championship from about 99 to 2003 after which the regs changed and we sold the car. It went to a rally spares place and got broke up so I dont where it is now. I raced it with an all steel crossflow nothing remotely like a 500bhp flame spitter!!

I think Welchs is deffo a Zakker

Dont think Ron Hudson used one but the shell looks like teh same sort of shell, think Ron used a BDG or BDX or summat similar there before going on to a Sierra Cosworth.

Welch's car looks superb in that shot, thanks! Feel free to post any mroe you ahve, they look real good quality!

In 1986 there were four Mk3 4WD Escorts, but I do not remember if they all had Xtrac systems.

Okay then:
Martin Schanche > John Smith > Barry Squibb > Mike Endean

And this one:
John Welch > Jonathan Palmer (1987 GP) > Kjetil Bolneset > ?

I think we had this one before, somewhere else in the forum:
Seppo Niittymäki > Ragnar Forsberg > Vidar Sauthon > Sven Lestander? > Michael Jernberg?

Who knows for sure?:
Terje Schie > Gunnar Kittilsen? > ?

In 1987 there was another one driven by a Frank Jensen from Norway.

And in 1988 Örjan Wahlund had one.

Evening Guru, read a Mike Endean article a while back where he mentions there were only three Mk 3 Xtrac Escorts he was envolved with, Nittymakis being the most advanced.

Eddi, I rememebr Wahlunds car, it was rolled in Buxtehude 88? or 89?

That ran a BDT I recall, wondering whether Schies was a bitza perhaps?

500 hp in rwd only!

What was the spec of teh Volvo343 cars that Walfridsson used? Isnt that why Martin went turbo as well as trying to beat the Audi's?

Slightly OT here, but as John Welch's 'scort was mentioned, I thought I would share a pic that I took in Mondello many moons ago...

1987, first year the ERC visited Mondello, right? I'm still wet from the rain that day. I can't believe my Dad was happy to stand in the rain all that time - mind you, he's not a big race fan but I remember his face when Hal Lewis in a black Mk 2 giving it loads of sideways stuff, he thought it was great. If he thought that was good, the first supercar heat had Olle Arnesson (can't rememebr who else) in it and they were there and then were gone in a wave of popping turbo's and other great sounds if you know what I mean. We had never seen anything like it. Great days.

winnie has a lot of promise if they can keep it on the circuit!
three mk3 xtrac's. Schanche's had a solid rear axle, welch's had independant. All of the Zakspeed engines were looked after by Minty, who still looks after both of endeans zakspeeds for his ex-schanche car. His 'spare 2nd' engine is the ex john cross zaker from his fiesta.

Minty also built a n/a zakspeed for bill stewart's mk3 rwd escort. This might have been in a Mk2 before, but don't know for sure.
