clutch release bearing

On a manual transmission car, what would happen to the clutch, gearbox and engine if the clutch release bearing broke ?

thanks

Usually as they wear out they make a distinctive worn bearing noise when the clutch is engaged (or all the time if the adjustment is out) But saying that I did have one go through a bell-housing once.

well my clutch (or the pedal) was making a loud squeaking noise everytime i pressed it. Its been doing this for a while, and only happens after I've been driving around for 30+ minutes.
But now, theres no noise like something is missing.

thing is though, when i pushed the car in neutral with the engine off, i could select a gear and the car would stop. Then i could put it back in neutral and move the car again..

any ideas ??

It sounds like the bearing could be on it's way out, but it may last for ages yet!
Since it only gets noisy once it's warmed up, that suggests that it's not completely seized or broken.
If the bearing does fail, the car should still be driveable!
You'll just have to start it in first gear, and "crash" the gears to change up.
If you get the revs just right, this isn't too difficult, but it's not very good for the gearbox or your wrist when you get it wrong!
It'll get you home, or to a garage anyway!

Your best bet would be to get it fixed soon. If it's a rear-wheel drive car, it's fairly easy and you could probably do it yourself, front-wheel drives tend to be a bit more awkward.
You'd probably be as well replacing the whole clutch, because the bearing problem may have damaged the pressure-plate, and in any case, if the bearing's worn, the rest of the clutch probably is as well!

Assuming it's a regular diaphragm clutch, it will wear a groove in the fingers of the diaphragm, usually. This really isn't a great concern as long as they aren't worn through too far.

What kind of car is it? Should this be in the Road Car Forum?

its a Ford Fiesta XR2i 16v (front wheel drive)
I've got a mechanic looking at it tomorrow, at the moment its undrivable.

I posted it here coz its a more technical question, also the car is a "performance" model and the clutch is an uprated one.
Its not a racer but i do take it on track

thanks for all the help anyway.
