2015 Grand Prix volunteering - official notice
2015 British GP Volunteering
________________________________________ It's that time of the year again! The MSA is inviting you to volunteer for the GP next year (2015). For BMMC members Eric Ridler is putting the form and an explanation letter on our BMMC website , so it should all be there for use by our members. We will also be sending the forms to our newsletter editors to send out in their next newsletters or as a separate distribution. Here are some rules/guidelines to note 1. You may apply for more than one duty (e.g. track and flag but must have done 12 days in each of the duties in 2014 (i.e. a minimum 24 days). 2. Please note that multi-day events count as individual days, e.g. a weekend event can count as two days. 3. Applications must be on the MSA form, please do not submit any additional sheets or generate your own on personal computers etc. 4. This application form should be used by everyone who wishes to volunteer. 5. Applications from novice/trainee officials unfortunately cannot be accepted. 6. If you are a member of more than one club please apply through one club only, multiple applications will not be accepted. 7. You must be available to sign-on on Thursday2nd July 8. If for exceptional reasons (marriage, ill health, change of job etc.) you were unable to do 12 days then please submit an application with a short note of explanation. 9. Only circuit race days count Your forms must be sent to your club for accreditation so they can review them and send them to the MSA before Friday 29th November- please note all BMMC ones need to be sent to ME - NOT your local comps sec or anyone else! A list of nominations will be published on www.msaevents.co.uk/bgp/marshals.php before Christmas. Any queries, please ask! Enjoy |

For info, as it was tremendously helpful in previous years: the MSA website now only provides a forward view (that I can find) of fixture permit details for forthcoming events.
That's something of a shame; it was very helpful to be able to search back through the calendar for the issued permits for the previous 12 months. If anyone knows any different, holler - before I email the MSA to ask about it. |

Anthony
You should apply to do the role for which you already hold a grade |

Anthony, If you're tight for making the minimum 12 days & need your October events to boost the count, then don't rush to send the form back! Clubs vary a little in cut-off dates, but you should be able to wait about a month if you need to?

Some advice for the future. If you're planning to do a GP in the following year, make a note of the MSA permit on your PRC as you go through your current year. Saves all this far-harting about when you apply.

Could I ask for a clarification?
As the holder of an IO grade I can only apply to attend as an IO but if I was a Post Chief I could apply to attend as a flaggie as well? Is this not a little unfair as I stand next to zero chance against Silverstone's regular IO's? Not intended as a rant - seeking clarification. Just thought it would be more fair if I could apply for an incident marshal type role also. Thanks in advance. |

Thanks all for the advice. Not that tight on day up to about 20 but still down to do 6 more days and wanted them to be counted. Found the MSA permits on the front page of programme where gives information on clarkes of course etc . One only had permit numbers and not name so googled the number and came up with the category.
Thanks for all your Help Anthony |

I would guess that he/she thinks the more experience the better, and that does seem logical to me. Unless you know how they actually choose who they pick, which is a mystery to me. |

No mystery at all.
Sift out anyone who doesn't meet the base criteria (looking at any special circumstances). If more left than needed, work down from those with the most days until have the number needed. Last year that happened at the 15 day mark for incident. Anthony is right to maximise the number of days he puts down and DJ's advice is good. The deadline for return is some way off yet. |

Grade & Duty are not the same thing. As long as you are "not a novice/trainee," you can apply for any duty in which you have done at least 12 days, this year. |

The MSA form appears to be a lot more definite than that about what grades are required for what duties.
The IO grade is only mentioned for duty as IO...whereas every grade in the universe is apparently suitable for flagging. Post Chiefs can flag but not do incident etc. They probably don't really mean it but that is what it says. Steve |

Before you read any further.
I believe that only those with experience as IOs at Silverstone should IO at Silverstone's Grand Prix. I remember my last year as an F1 incident marshal. 8 graded IOs on post, most of the 7 other ones with more experience than the local, who we all properly deferred to, as he was the local specialist. We had one track grade to make up the numbers. If non Silverstone IOs cannot apply for the grand prix as anything other than an IO, all that experience is lost to a potential team. This cannot be right. IO is an invite only grade now, but it's a poisoned chalice if you want to do the British GP. "Best in the world?" |

Yep my thinking was if over subscribed they would then look at number of days done that's what has been mentioned to me whilst on post so wanted to make sure all the days I do are counted. Unsure of the exact process but seemed logical. Best of luck to all applying so many rumours as to how they choose the marshals for the BGP all we can do is fill in the paperwork and wait and see.

I suspect that it's more likely that the relevant chiefs know most of the people who apply, and select the people that they think are best able to do the job.
Exactly! At the end of they day, the only people who know are the chiefs, and anyone they may have told (not me). It certainly won't hurt you to wait, and add all of your days. Just as long as you get the paperwork in by the deadline your club has set. |
