Nissan no to F1
Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has ruled out an entry into Formula One in the foreseeable future.
Nissan president Carlos Ghosn admitted that F1 is effective in building a positive image for a car manufacturer. But he said that was not a priority for Nissan, which is recovering after being in substantial debt in the late 1990s. It sold a 35% shareholding that year to Renault, which is helping the company rebuild. There has been continuing speculation that Nissan might become involved in F1, especially as its two main rivals will be there next season, when Toyota will join Honda on the grid. You cannot expect us to come back to racing for another two to three years Carlos Ghosn Nissan president But Ghosn said on Monday at a press conference on the eve of the Tokyo Motor Show: "Are we going to go for racing? Not in the short term. "Obviously, Formula One helps building an image. "(But) I don't think that Formula One would be the basic ingredient to regain market presence," he said. "There are more basic things that we have to do first, if we go to such kind of investment," he said. "We are still at the begining of this phase, so you cannot expect us to come back to racing for another two to three years." Nissan is the second biggest car manufacturer in Japan, behind Toyota. |
