Your list is missing one of the leading contenders...
It's good to have a dream and achieve it , even if the Formula Ford training and so on to be a true contender is not really there. Quote:
Aside from Mr. Thexton, there were plenty more (somewhat more competitive) amateur drivers in the series back in the days when privateers were encouraged to enter the primary ATCC/Supercars series. Notably current Tickford team owners Rod Nash and Rusty French among others. These days wealthy amateurs are more likely to enter the Australian Manufacturers Championship (production cars), Australian GT or Carrera Cup as their dollars seem to be largely unwanted in the Supercars series. [That is, unless the driver has a suitable professional racing background in Formula Ford / Super2 to go with the dollars they bring.] Last edited by V8 Fireworks; 15 Oct 2019 at 02:32. |

I was trying like mad to remember his name, Googled and all and I bloody couldn't get - of course Thexton rates right up there, pity I can't go back and add him

Matt Neal, who can drive, never failed to disappoint in his handful of Supercar starts.

Not sure how serious we're meant to be here, given there are many highly-respected and highly-credientialed drivers in that list.

Everyone has different opinions, ask the fanatical Greg Murphy fans what they think of Marcos Ambrose and you will get my point and vise versa

Rod Nash wasn't too bad. Rusty French never raced supercars - group c in 1980s.
Most of the privateers in the mid to late 1990s were okay, none stand out as complete rubbish. Quote:

Quite a few overrated drivers in the list, but who were not the worst.
A vote for McLaughlin already? Someone's either bitter and twisted or taking the ****, may as well vote for Brock in that case. |

Why not? Brock was overrated too. He had the best gear by a country mile during his successful years. Later on when everyone else caught up technically he didn't win much at all.

I agree with what he said, Brock's team had all the money under the sun, they were by far the highest funded in the field, even a 2nd rate driver would look good in their gear. Go to YouTube and look at the comments of other drivers driving his gear of the time and listen to their comments, they are telling |

With all due respect Trev, not the best thread ever created.
A few of the names included are legends, and by including them, openly invites needless driver bashing. |

I know but it was tongue in cheek with all the Fabs bashing going on I just thought I would add to the mix and see what popped out the end, and I have been right so far

Anyone remember Charles Ryman?
Had an ex Seton Falcon, and the ex B&H BMW Transporter, which he spent a pretty penny re doing both as he felt he could do a better job than their respective original owners. I remember at the time he seemed more interested in sitting in his race suit in his mega trailer being ‘seen’ as a race driver than he was in actually driving. Made Thexton look fast.. |
