Villeneuve to Leave at End of '02 - Confirmed??
Well, if you beleive F1Rejects.com, he has already announced he will leave at the end of 2002...I haven't seen confirmation of this anywhere else, but I can't imagine why they'd make it up - I know they are harldy Reuters or Associated Press, but nonetheless, here it is, as it was at the website:

Leave?? But to WHERE?? If indeed JV is saying he's leaving without stipulating a destination beforehand, this could be a very silly move (if true).
Arrows here we come?? |

Why don't we start the "Jacques is going to Ferrari chestnut"?

Judging by the stories flying around at the moment (Renault, quite soon?) I'd be surprised if he hangs around as long as the end of 2002. In fact I'd be surprised if he races any European GP in the BAR!

I don't think he'll leave BAR unless he can find a better drive. It would be a mistake to leave without lining up a drive elsewhere as he may find it VERY difficult to come back. Maybe he is already having discussions, who knows?

He may go back to race in the States (CART if it still exists). I think the racing there suits his style better...

Anthony Davidson??? We'll see as the testing progresses. And anyway, I don't think JV will leave the team once he starts the season. He might try to get a CART position before the start of the season??

How can we be perfectly honest about future unknowns?
Draw a line under the 2001 season and above the line we see BAR Honda in 6th place, with 5 teams under them, not 2. Below the line we can't see any results obviously. But what we can see is the extension of the Honda engine contract, the hiring of David Richards and Geoff Willis and their track records, by all reports a decent-sized budget, and a pair of top drivers (despite all the knocks on him, if BAR Honda gives Villenueve a good weapon, he will know what to do with it. And Panis is just plain fast). So if you think you can foreclose the future on Honda, Richards, Willis and Oastler, and JV and Panis and all their sponsors, then fine. Your a braver man than I am Gunga Din. |

Way too early to tell what JV will do but I'm hoping if he does leave it will be to a competitive team. JV on his day was a delight to watch and he will certainly have a go if he thinks there is half a chance. My kind of driver

If one of the 1000 BAR test drivers were to replace Jacques it would be Darren Manning since he's the main tester. Probably.

I'm wondering how much improvment Jacques feels he needs to have in order to stay at BAR. The gap to the big 3 is pretty big, and it looks like Renault is on the verge of joining them.
Maybe that's why he needs to bail out now. Frankly, I think there would be more than just one offer on the table for his services, and I don't think money is the biggest issue with JV at this time in his career. I think Frank would like JV back, and I think JPM could live with it, as he has said that their similar styles and attitudes has led to a level of mutual respect now, with Canada largely forgotten. He'll probably know what to do after his first test session in the 004! |

Hopefully he'll decide to stay (assuming he hasn't gone totally insane by then)
And would Frank want JV back having been rejected once? The waiting list is long enough without JV. I think Jacques knows that- in 2000 with all the Benetton rumours he was saying how Williams was the best team (and basically how much he'd probably like to return). Anyway, how about Le Mans? That would make him the only driver to win the F1, Indy 500, IndyCar and Le Mans. And he'd want to do it immediately after he leaves F1: Quote:
