Kyalami
And I thought you were all F1 fans! I cannot believe nobody has yet cried out in pain at the news that one of the greatest F1 tracks of all time is to be lost to industry developers.
Any thoughts anyone, or is history worth caring about? |

Jonny, it's still not a certainty that the track will be developed. There are three interested parties for the land, one of which is keen to leave it as a motor racing circuit. The other two are bad news I'm afraid.

It doesn't really bother me - keeping in touch with your heritage and your roots is OK, but dwelling on the "halcyon" good old days just isn't healthy!
Why are there no cries of pain about Hockenheim being emasculated, Silverstone continually sanitised and the plans to hold Grand Prix in Dubai instead of San Marino? Progress, my friend. |

Total old chap, it was more a worry about part of the circuit being sold off for redevelopment into office or housing, not hanging on to the old days and the original Kyalami.
The irony is that there is plenty of land adjoining Kyalami that could be developed in place of the circuit. Once again the greed of the land owners prevails. Personally I would be extremely upset to see the circuit emancipated and reduced to a 'club' track, as South Africa has precious little to offer motor sport fans. The new circuit at Welkom is miles from anywhere and not easy to get to. Don't forget South Africa has virtually no public transport system and fans have to rely on cars to get to and from race meetings. Kyalami on the other hand has excellent access and is only a short drive from Johannesburg. |

So does this mean the end of World Superbike racing in South Africa? Unless they move to Welkom (where the 500s.....sorry, the MotoGP class) race.
As for Kyalami, it's sad that the place has been sold off yet again, but that's progress. |

I would imagine they would move the bikes to Welkom. We still have to wait for the outcome on who has bought the land. The circuit is run by the South African AA so there is some glimmer of hope. I'll post fresh news as and when I receive it from my friends at Kyalami.

Well I was just thinking....
Will a decent circuit ever be built again? BTW I hate what they're doing to Hockenheim and what they've done to Silverstone, Monza, Imola, Ostereichring, Nurburgring..... |

I think youve got to balance the progess thing , with keeping the history thats accociated with these circuits.. yes , youve got to have progress , but you cant keep having the guts ripped out of these circuits just cause its the current trend.

Keep things in perspective - it's not the circuit that matters, it's what took place on it...the Nordschleife circuit wouldn't be nearly as romantic if it was used for lawnmower racing

Does anyone know what the reduced circuit would look like? Autosport says it will turn left at the end of the pits and rejoin on the back straight, but has a track map been produced yet?

Yes the changes to Silverstone are still going ahead, apart from the new pits after Club corner. Instead the current pits will be upgraded. It was considered financially unviable to have F1 only pits in the end.

I still dont see the point of having a slow entry into a banked corner. They should bring back the old Stowe and the short straight. The the banking will do what the BRDC want it to do.....

Incidentally, I'm putting the finishing touches to my new website, E-tracks, which will have information on just these subjects. It's taken around two years to put together, and includes track maps of hundreds of circuits from all over the world, together with contact information, artistic renderings of circuits, track histories and the latest news on circuit changes. Hopefully I'll have the bulk online by the end of the weekend. I'll keep you posted.
